Econ 410, Fall 2007Instructor: Lauren RaymerWriting Assignment GuidelinesIf desired, students may elect to read one of the books from the list below and write a 6-8 page critical review. If the paper is completed, the grade for the course will be re-weighted so that the midterm and final are worth 15% and 30% of the final grade, respectively, while the paper will be worth 15%. Book Choices:- Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything- David D. Friedman. Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life- Marshall Jevons. Murder at the Margin and Fatal Equilibrium. If you choose these selections for your critical review, you must read and comment on both books. The final paper should be structured as follows:- The first 2-3 pages of the paper should consist of a concise, well-planned summary of the book you have chosen. You should provide enough detailed information to convey that you have actually read the material, rather than obtaining a summary from the Internet, Sparknotes, or other sources.- The subsequent 4-6 pages of the paper should be a critical review of the reading. Consider the following questions when planning this section:o What did you find particularly interesting about the work? Why?o What do you feel the author could have improved upon or explained better?o How does the book specifically relate to the ideas discussed in class? Why do you think it was chosen for this assignment?o In what ways are microeconomic principles helpful to the exposition of this book? Are there more economic concepts that were unmentioned in the text, but that could be applied to these ideas in the future?- Note that the above questions are merely suggestions for how to begin the writing process – they are not to be answered in an itemized list. The purpose of the paper is to encourage you to think critically about the text and the themes of the course. For this reason, independent thinking is not only highly encouraged, but an essential component for you to be successful on this assignment.Requirements:- Papers must be typed, double-spaced, and use Times New Roman or similar font (No Courier, Verdana Wide or other wide font, please). Margins should be no greater than 1” on all sides.Econ 410, Fall 2007Instructor: Lauren Raymer- Papers should follow MLA, APA, or Chicago writing styles. It does not matter which style you choose, as long as you are consistent throughout the paper. For helpful style and writing tips, see The Little, Brown Compact Handbook by Jane E. Aaron. A copy of this text can be borrowed from me upon request, or obtained from the Davis Library reference desk. - All sources must be clearly documented with both an in-text citation and a bibliographic reference. Failure to document sources is a clear violation of the honor code, and will be taken very seriously. If you use an author’s ideas, even if you do not quote them directly, you must cite them. This especially includes any Internet sources. If you are unsure about whether or not to cite something, feel free to email me throughout the process. Admitting that you don’t know something is infinitely better than making a mistake involving plagiarism.- Papers should be free of spelling and grammatical errors. Papers with a significant amount of mistakes in this area will lose points unnecessarily. Carefully proofread your paper at least once before turning it in.Tips for a Successful Paper:- Though the ability to procrastinate on this assignment is tempting, avoid it at all costs. Critical thinking about the ideas of the reading takes time, and it may be helpful to have several days between finishing the book and writing about it to collect your thoughts. You will not be able to do this if you wait until the last minute, and it will reflect negatively in your final product.- As you read, make small notes (either in the margin or elsewhere) about important points or ideas that arise. It is often the case that moments of brilliance occur at unexpected moments, and then are lost as we progress through the work.- Before writing, create a clear outline or plan of your intended work. This will help you avoid unnecessary digressions that can make your writing less interesting and unclear.- Everyone can improve their writing, and there are a wide variety of resources to help you do so. One of the best resources available to students is the UNC Writing Center, which offers both online and in-person writing tutors. Students can bring their work at any stage to a writing tutor for help on how to improve it, and often the sessions can be quite helpful.o To have someone help you with your paper, see: In-person: http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/writing.html Online: http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/online.html o For a handout specifically tailored to help you write a better critical review, see: http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/review.htmlDue Date: If you elect to write a critical review, it is due no later than Monday, November 19th, 2007 in class. No late assignments will be accepted, but you are more than welcome to turn in your paper early if you wish. You are also welcome to come to office hours with drafts of your paper in order to receive comments and suggestions
