Eachmajor diagnostic category will be studied emphasizing the definitions, etiology, anddisorder maintenance, assessment by symptom recognition, differential diagnosis andpreferred therapy.OBJECTIVESUpon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:1. Define mental disorder2. Describe the history of the DSM3. Identify the five axes of the DSM4. Describe how and why the DSM is used.5. Describe criteria for the major diagnostic categories.6. Identify etiological factors involved in each major disorder.7. Identify dominant treatment modalities for each major disorder.8. D.COURSE REQUIREMENTS1. Professionalism and courtesy in regard to attendance is expected.2. Active participation in class discussions is expected. Students who attempt tomonopolize discussions will be asked to limit their contributions to classdiscussions.3. Completion of all readings as assigned is expected.4. Completion of all papers and assignments on time is expected. (Latepapers/assignments will be lowered one letter grade for each date late.)5. Completion of three comprehensive examinations based on the assigned readings,lectures, class discussions, and multi-media presentations is expected.6. Student will write four mini-papers. One on each of the following topics: AnxietyDisorders, Personality Disorders, Mood Disorders and Psychotic Disorders. Eachpaper will be five to seven pages. The first two papers, (Anxiety and PersonalityDisorders) will be due on March 9th, the Tuesday following Spring break. The lasttwo papers will be due on April 8th. Each paper should cite five or more keyreferences/books to have in your library on the topic. Prominent names in the fieldshould be cited. The paper must be concise, well researched, and practical.Student may single or double-spaced, using the Publication Manual of theAmerican Psychological Association as a guide. Bullets and list may be used. Areview of the disorder is to include:a. Description of symptomology—physical, emotional, behavioral, indicatorsb. Differential diagnosis questions.c. Possible etiological factors to assess and questions to ask in assessment.d. Preferred therapeutic interventions of treatment.e. Basic treatment recommendations and likely prognosis.f. References—Five bookGRADING PROCEDUREThe final course grade will be determined based on the combined scores on all exams,homework assignments, and papers. Grades will be calculated by dividing the totalnumber of points accumulated by the total possible points. Attendance and classparticipation will be considered in cases of borderline grades. It is hoped that studentswill not miss any class sessions. When it is necessary to be absent, students should sendan e-mail to the professor prior to the class session if possible to maintain communicationregarding material covered in class. Excessive absences may result in the student beingdropped from the course.Professional and Ethical Conduct: Students will conduct themselves in this course asprofessionals, preparing projects as directed and in a timely manner. They will completeassignments and exam in an ethical manner. Plagiarism, the presentation of another’swork as your own, will be considered a serious violation of the Code of Ethics and mayresult in failure for the course.
