Karen Cockrell E-MAIL ADDRESS: [email protected] OFFICE: C 201 TELEPHONE: ADJUNCT OFFICE 972-860-1046 : DIVISION: 972-860-7108 OFFICE HOURS: None CLASS SCHEDULE: TR 11:00 AM – 12:20 PM ROOM: C 305 GRADING POLICY: The semester grade will be determined by these items: Homework 20% Exams 55% Final Exam 25% Homework is required for this class and is submitted through http://pearsonmylab.com . Homework due dates and grades are posted on student’s account. Use the Course ID number cockrell33818 when creating your “MyMathLab” account. You may register and pay by credit card online or purchase a MyMathLab access code at the bookstore. TEXTBOOK: College Algebra, Blitzer, Pearson (5th Edition), 2010 ISBN: 032-1-666-100. Purchase of the textbook is OPTIONAL. An online version of the textbook comes with the MyMathLab account which is required for homework submission.There will be four exams in addition to the final exam. A comprehensive, departmental final examination will be administered in all College Algebra classes. No exam grade will be dropped. Exam 1 Tuesday, September 20,2011 Chapter 2 Exam 2 Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Chapter 3 Exam 3 Tuesday, November1, 2011 Chapter 4 Exam 4 Tuesday, November 22, 2011 Chapter 5 and 6 Final Exam Week of December 13, 2011 Chapters 2 - 8 GRADING RATIONALE: Average Letter Grade 90 – 100 A 80 – 89 B 70 – 79 C 60 – 69 D Below 59 F POLICY ON MISSED TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: A student can make up an exam for reasons of extenuating circumstances. Examples of extenuating circumstances are death in the family, excused illness (hospitalization or note from doctor), Eastfield athlete and/or military deployment. Make-up exams will be given in the Testing Center and must be completed by the beginning of the second regularly scheduled class following the exam. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: The LEARNING ASSISTANCE CENTER provides free tutoring in math, writing, and other subjects. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the LAC for additional help in their course work. The LAC is located in room C-236, and their phone number is 972-860-7177. The MATH SPOT also provides free tutoring in mathematics. It is located on the 3rd floor corner between the C and S building. Tutoring schedule varies each semester. CALCULATOR: As of Spring 2010, a graphing calculator is required for all College Algebra Courses. You may choose your own graphing calculator model; however, TI 83 or TI 84 version is preferred. Graphing Calculators may not be allowed during some examinations. DROP DATE: Last date to drop with a grade of “W” is November 17. 2011. CATALOG: Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra and an appropriate assessment score or Developmental Mathematics 0099 or Development Mathematics 0093. This course is a study of relations and functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and special functions. Other topics include complex numbers, systems of equations and inequalities, theory of equations, progressions, the binomial theorem, proofs, and applications. GRADE REPORT: Grade reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online. Just use your student identification number when you log onto e-Connect at http://econnect.dcccd.edu/.ATTENDANCE POLICY: You are expected to regularly attend all classes in which you are enrolled. Students have the responsibility to attend class and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs. If a student is unable to complete a course (or courses) in which he/she is registered, it is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course by the appropriate date. (The date is published in the academic calendar each year and in each semester’s class schedule). If a student does not withdraw, he/she will receive a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”. Students who are absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday may take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence if, not later than the 15th day of the semester, the student notified the instructor(s) that the student would be absent for a religious holiday. Sec. 51.911 TX Educ. Code. DROP POLICY: To drop a class or withdraw from the college, students must follow the prescribed procedure. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in receiving a performance grade, usually grade of “F”. No drop or withdrawal requests are accepted by telephone. Students who drop a class or withdraw from the College before the semester deadline receive a “W” (Withdraw) in each class dropped. The deadline for receiving a “W” is indicated on the academic calendar and the current class schedule. If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from it by November 17. STOP BEFORE YOU DROP SIX DROP RULE: For students who enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career, unless the drop qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops you cannot drop any other courses with a “W”. Therefore, please exercise caution when dropping courses in any Texas public institution of higher learning, including all seven of the Dallas County Community Colleges. INCOMPLETES An incomplete grade of “I” may be given when an unforeseen emergency prevents you from completing the work in a course.
