Grades: 2 Exams 500 points each 1000 points Problem Sets 50 points each 500 Attendance and Participation 100 points 100 1600 Homework received after the assigned due date will be marked down one letter grade. No homework assignment will be accepted after the subsequent assignment is due (e.g. HW#5 will only be accepted up to the due date of HW#6); after that time, no credit will be available for that assignment. Academic Honesty: Academic honesty is essential to the work we do. Academic dishonesty (cheating) will not be tolerated. Cases of academic dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with academic regulations (see pages 35-37, University of Arkansas, Catalog of Studies, 2006-2007). Inclement Weather Policy The general policy of the University is to remain open regardless of weather conditions. You are expected to make your own determination about whether to attempt to come to class. You should make every attempt to get to class within the bounds of your personal safety. Class will not be held if the University is closed or if the transit buses are not able to operate. An attempt will be made to notify you via one of three mechanisms in the event class is cancelled due to inclement weather: 1) email notification, 2) voice mail notification, or 3) post a notice to the WEB site for the class.Schedule-GEOL 4063 (sec 001): Principles of Geochemistry: Spring 2008 Date Class Topic Text Jan 14 G 1 Atomic Structure, Valence, Quantum Numbers Review Aber chpt 1 Aber chpts 8,9 Problem Set 1 Assigned Chemical composition of the crust and selected rocks Jan 16 R 2 Periodic Table, Atomic Weight, Units Review on your own Appendix C Some Mathematics Concepts: Anderson, 2005 Jan 21 3 No Class: Martin Luther King Holiday Jan 23 R 4 Bonding, Ionic, Covalent, Hydrogen, Radius Ratios Problem Set 1 due at start of class Problem Set 2 Assigned Moles, atomic weights, bonding Jan 28 G 5 Thermodynamics And chpts 1-5 Jan 30 G 6 Thermodynamics Problem Set 2 due at start of class Problem Set 3 Assigned Basic Thermodynamics Feb 4 G 7 Thermodynamics Feb 6 G 8 Thermodynamics Problem Set 3 due at start of class Feb 11 R 9 Acids and Bases And chpt 15 Aber chpt 6 Problem Set 4 Assigned Acids and Bases Feb 13 R 10 Acids and Bases Feb 18 R 11 Acids and Bases Feb 20 R 12 Acids and Bases Problem Set 4 due at start of class February 25 G 13 Feldspar Weathering And chpt 16 Aber chpt 7 Problem Set 5 Assigned Feldspar Weathering and Evaporites February 27 G 14 Evaporites March 3 G 15 Evaporites Problem Set 5 due at start of class March 5 16 Midterm Exam March 10 R 17 Carbonate Equilibrium And chpt 16 Problem Set 6 Assigned Carbonate equilibrium Aber chpt 6 March 12 R 18 Carbonate EquilibriumMarch 17 Through March 21 - Spring Break March 24 R 19 Oxidation – Reduction And chpt 12 Problem Set 6 due at start of class Problem Set 7 Assigned Redox and eh-pH March 26 R 20 Eh-pH March 31 G 21 Fugacity And chpt 7 April 2 R 22 Clay Minerals Problem Set 7 due at start of class Problem Set 8 Assigned Clay Minerals and Cation Exchange April 7 R 23 Cation/Anion Exchange April 9 G 24 Trace Elements and Magma And chpt 17 Problem Set 8 due at start of class Aber chpt 8 Problem Set 9 Assigned Rare Earth Elements and Magma, Dating April 14 G 25 Rare Earth Elements, Magmas April 16 G 26 Radioactive Decay Aber chpts 8,9 Problem Set 10 Assigned Geochemical Systems April 21 G 27 Rb-Sr and Isochron Systematics April 28 R 28 Geochemical Systems Aber chpt 10 Problem Set 9 due at start of class April 30 R 29 Geochemical Systems Problem Set 10 due at start of class May 6 30 Final Exam: Tuesday, May 6, 3:00 pm - 5:00
