Thomas E. Patterson. ISBN: 978-0-07-723792-9 Purpose: The objective of this course is to acquaint the undergraduate student with the structure and organization of both the American Federal Government and the Texas State Government. This course is designed along the lines of an independent study course, and thus relies heavily on the student’s efforts. Further, GOVT 2301 meets statutory requirements as set forth by the state of Texas. Course Requirements: This is a reading intensive course! Only those students with strong reading and comprehension skills, along with considerable resolve and dedication, should enroll in this course. The student is strongly advised to dedicate significant effort to the readings required for this course, and not fall behind. The requirements for this course are extensive, but should not be excessively difficult if granted appropriate attention. There are twelve (12) chapter quizzes. The final grade will be an average of these twelve (12) quizzes. Grades: The grading scale for this course is as follows: 100-90= A 89-80= B 79-70= C 69-60= D 59-00= F There is no curve for this course, or for any assignment. You will be graded only by your own efforts. No extra credit is available. Additionally, rounding up of final grades will occur for a maximum of one (1) point (thus, a 78.9 will not be rounded up to a ‘B’). Attendance: Attendance will not be checked for this course. There are no requirements to participate in any chat-rooms or groups projects. However, students who fail to complete three (3) quizzes will be withdrawn with a grade of ‘F’ or ‘U’/’X’. Dishonesty: Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated! Either will result in immediate failure of the course. Assisting another to cheat or plagiarize will also result in course failure. While this course is conducted over Blackboard/internet, it is not a group effort. Honesty and integrity are expected at all times. The student is strongly urged to make the necessary and appropriate accommodations to meet their obligations as far in advance as possible. Pop-up Blockers: Students are encouraged to disable all pop-up blockers, as these can prevent one from viewing the various posted TIPS. These are often used for general announcements and reminders. Assignment Explanations: The following is a brief explanation of all assignments for this course. Should the student have any questions, please contact the instructor immediately. Chapter Quizzes: Below is a list of chapters that will be covered in this course. A short description follows each chapter number. The date following each chapter description is that of the quiz for that chapter. Do note that all quizzes are set for a Thursday. You may take the quiz at any time on that date only. Questions for these quizzes will be of Multiple-choice style. There will be twenty questions for each quiz, and a time limit of twenty (20) minutes will apply (this is the same amount of questions but with ten additional minutes compared to the instructor’s classroom courses). Students who fail to take a quiz on the proper date will receive a grade of zero (0) for that quiz. There are twelve (12) chapter quizzes, and the average of these quizzes will equal the student’s final grade.
