Revised Fall Semester 2005 3 EDU 542 PURPOSE OF THE COURSE This course focuses on the presentation of mathematical concepts in ways that lead children to see their relevance in a wide variety of situations Emphasis will be placed on the correlation of research findings with that of appropriate implementation in the elementary school classroom Numerous examples of how a classroom can be organized to meet the varying needs of children in grades K 6 will be provided the roles of teacherdirected lessons will be clearly explained and activities and materials for introducing topics to children and developing their understanding of them will be presented In this course the student learns criteria for the elementary K 6 mathematics curriculum strategies for instruction and means of assessment as recommended by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics 2000 and by the Alabama State Department of Education in its curriculum guide Alabama Course of Study Mathematics 1997 The prerequisite for this course is EDU 375 Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School or an equivalent three semester hour course in teaching mathematics in the elementary school from an undergraduate EDU 542 program in elementary education In addition Alternative Master students must have already completed all general studies courses in mathematics before enrolling in EDU 542 This course is intended for students enrolled in a graduate program in elementary education Other pertinent aspects of this course will include the following 1 An analysis and evaluation of ways the calculator and the microcomputer are used in the elementary school 2 The development of manipulative materials for teaching mathematics in the elementary school In this course the student learns about the use of technology in the teaching of mathematics the research and current literature in professional journals on learning theories relevant to such instruction the use of manipulatives for teaching mathematical concepts appropriate means of assessment strategies for teaching problem solving and the use of children s literature in teaching mathematics 4 5 EDU 542 OBJECTIVES As a result of reading solving mathematical problems and participating in class discussions and hands on activities students will be able to achieve the following objectives 1 Demonstrate ability to facilitate students individual and collective use of technology to locate collect create produce communicate and produce information by A Preparing an analysis of
