6.4. Potential sale of watershed for conservation reserve. The managers of the DanielPickett forest have been approached by a non-profit organization specializing indeveloping and managing conservation reserves. The non-profit organization isspecifically interested in acquiring the portion of the Daniel Pickett forest located in theTrout Creek Watershed. It seems that the non-profit group has been active in developinga larger reserve system in the Trout Creek area, and the Daniel Pickett forest just happensto contain the headwaters of the watershed. The region manager of the Daniel Pickettforest is interested in understanding the effect this land sale may have on the managementplan for the area. She asks you to provide her a before- and after-sale description of theresources, in the following format:A series of queries to the stands GIS database should suffice in obtaining the appropriatestatistics regarding the before-sale conditions of the Daniel Pickett forest. For example,to find the area of land in the 0-20 age class containing a vegetation type A, one woulduse the query: ( [Age] >= 0) and ([Age] <= 20) and ([Veg_type] = "A" ).a) Before-sale conditions of the Daniel Pickett forest.Vegetation typeAge class A B C0-20 0.0 499.9 163.721-40 0.0 0.0 769.741-60 564.4 0.0 66.961-80 356.9 0.0 0.080+ 78.5 0.0 0.0In order to develop the after sale conditions of the Daniel Pickett forest, the followingsteps can be followed.1. Make the watersheds GIS database the active theme in the Table of Contents2. Select the watersheds that are not the Trout Creek watershed.3. Add the Geoprocessing file extension to the project, by selecting from the Main Menusystem, File, then Extensions. After the dialog bow appears, checkGeoprocessing, and press OK.4. Clip the stands to the selected features in the watersheds GIS database (all watershedsthat are not Trout Creek). This will enable the development of a GIS databasethat would contain the resources of the forest if the Trout Creek watershed weresold. To enable a clip process, select View, then GeoProcessing Wizard from theMain Menu system. Select the Clip one theme based on another option, anddevelop criteria whereby the input theme is the stands GIS database, and theoverlay theme is the watersheds GIS database.5. Make the new GIS database the active theme in the Table of Contents, and developqueries to determine the amount of land by age class and vegetation type.b) After-sale conditions of the Daniel Pickett forest.Vegetation typeAge class A B C0-20 0.0 386.1 0.021-40 0.0 0.0 625.241-60 248.8 0.0 43.561-80 292.5 0.0 0.080+ 78.5 0.0 0.0In addition, she requests the following:c) A map showing the after-sale arrangement of vegetation classes (types) on the DanielPickett forest.Develop a Layout Window where the vegetation in the clipped GIS database is coloredaccording to the vegetation class.d) A brief summary of your opinion of the effects of the sale on the management of theforest. While the Trout creek watershed may have accounted for about 37% of the land areawithin the Daniel Pickett forest, over half (56%) of the area in the 41-60 age class, vegetation type A land would be sold, perhaps having a significant effect on near-term planned thinning and clearcut harvesting
