Slide 1HistoryInventing the FutureFirst Robot of it’s KindToday’s Unmanned VehiclesFactsRoboticsBy:Marc A. WilanderHistory•Not just robots but all different forms of unmanned vehicles / aircraft were thought of dating back centuries ago.•The first unmanned “robot” was nothing more than a bomb with a time fuse strapped onto a balloon. This was used during 1848-1849 by the Austrian Habsburg Empire to crush a Nationalist Rebellion in the city of Venice.Inventing the Future•In 1898, Nikola Tesla created the first remote-controlled boat for a NYC Mechanical Convention. It was later turned down and thought to be too wasteful and potentially a backfire.•“You do not see there a wireless torpedo,” Tesla said. “You see there the first of a race of mechanical men which will do the laborious work of the human race."First Robot of it’s Kind•During WWII, the Germans developed a remote controlled UGV (unmanned ground vehicle). It was a mini tank that was 4 feet long and used to clear minefields as well as bunkers. It’s nickname was “The Goliath” because it was able to navigate the terrain, expendable, and extremely lethal.Today’s Unmanned Vehicles•Most of the unmanned vehicles today are UAV’s, such as the RQ-1 (recon), which are used primarily for Reconnaissance but since the aftermath of 9/11 they have now become MQ-1 (multiuse). “Predators” as they are called have been on various missions from recon to bombing runs. One Predator even saw combat action in 2003 against an Iraqi MiG fighter. It was destroyed but for the first time in combat history, an unmanned vehicle fought against the conventional fighter jets used today.Facts•Used primarily by the Military and funding has increased significantly since 9/11.•Comes in sizes ranging from holding with both hands to the size of bulldozers.•The shapes of aircraft look like a smaller version of a plane you fly in whereas those used on the ground are given tank treads to cope with the terrain.•Jobs include scanning minefields, deactivating bombs that haven’t exploded, clearing explosives from populated areas, neutralizing hostile
