Course Competencies - The student will be able to perform on a "novice" to "intermediate" level, as defined by ACTFL Guidelines and SCANS, which are available upon request. Assignments - Assignments are to be prepared before class. Each assignment will be due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated. Assignments will include readings and textbook exercises (oral and written), “My Spanish Lab” (www.myspanishlab.com), which requires internet access*, and/or other activities designed to stimulate and reinforce foreign language acquisition. Please prepare your assignments carefully and expect to participate in class. On average you should study an amount of time equal to that spent in class. In this class you will learn a skill. As in acquiring any skill, you must practice, practice, practice!! This is similar to other skills, such as swimming, running, tennis, football or piano. Grading Procedure - Exams/Compositions..................................................................30% Daily work (wkbk, hmwk, quizzes, participation)…………................20% Attendance................................................................................10% Oral (exams, dialogues, lab, presentations)..................................20% Final exam (oral and written)......................................................20% Grading Scale A = 100-90 B = 89-80 C = 79-70 D = 69-60 * * A “C” or better is required for F = 59-below * continuing to the next level of Spanish at SPC. The final exam is scheduled for Monday, May 9, 2011 from 7:45-9:45 pm. It is comprehensive and must be taken at the scheduled time.SPAN 1512.501 Spring 2011MW 3 Attendance Policy - Class attendance is mandatory! You are expected to be on time and to remain the entire class period. If you leave prior to the dismissal of class, you will be counted absent. Three tardies will constitute an absence (this means there are two “free” tardies). Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period. Attendance grades will be recorded as follows. Absences Grade 0 100 1 90 2 80 3 70 4 60 If you miss class for any reason you are considered absent. There will be no make up work. If you will be absent, contact me prior to the scheduled class, as homework that is due may be turned in early. It will not be accepted otherwise! Each student must take the oral final exam. Perfect attendance will be rewarded! Each student with perfect attendance and an "85" or better overall average, may exercise the option to take the comprehensive written final exam. This may not be a realistic expectation for all students - it will be the individual's choice. (See the General Catalog and the SPC "Student Guide"). Class Conduct - It is my belief that learning best occurs in a supportive and respectful atmosphere. It is expected that you will conduct yourself in a responsible manner. Rudeness and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Tardiness, sleeping and visiting with classmates will not be permitted since such activities inhibit the learning atmosphere. Pagers and cell phones are not appropriate in class. Should you carry one of these items, please turn it off upon entering the classroom. If infractions occur, I will visit with you at that time. If the problem persists, you will be withdrawn from the class at my request and receive a grade of "withdrawn failing." Special Notice - If at any time you decide to drop the course, it is your responsibility to do so. Please follow the appropriate procedures. If you are absent five times and have not initiated the "drop", you will be dropped by the instructor and expect to receive a grade of "withdrawn failing." The last day to drop the course is Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Academic Integrity - Cheating and plagiarism constitute serious offenses and will not be tolerated. (See General College Catalog, p. 23). In this class, please be aware that utilization of online translation websites constitutes cheating. Americans with Disabilities Act – Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodations must provide acceptable documentation of his/her disability to the Special Services Coordinator. For more information, call or visit the Special Services Office in the Student Services Building, 894-9611 ext. 2529, 2530. A student who enrolls in this class that may need classroom accommodations is strongly encouraged to schedule an intake interview with the special services department before enrolling in this class or prior to the add/drop date for this semester.SPAN 1512.501 Spring 2011MW 4 SPAN152.501 – Monday/Wednesday 6:00 – 8:15 pm Spring 2011 – Course Overview Week 1 Wed 1-19 Intro. to Class/Review Syllabus/Student Info Sheets, Begin review of Capítulo1 Week 2 Mon 1-24
