Questions and Answers about next week’s Oral Presentation:What is my speech based on?It is based on the ONE best article/study you read and did the annotated bibliographies for. You probably have two to choose from, but you must choose only one, the best one, to base your speech on. The best one means it is very relevant to your hypothesis topic and has good solid information. A study is better than a plain article most of the time.Does everyone in my research team have to do a speech?YesWhat happens if someone from my team doesn’t show up for the speech?The show must go on—without the student. The absent student gets a ZERO for the speech, but it does not affect the other team members.How long should my speech be?As close to 2 minutes as possible.What should I include in my speech?Authors’ purpose/goal/thesis (whichever is appropriate)Authors’ methodology if a study was conducted (be general and brief)Authors’ arguments if it’s mainly an article and not a studyAuthors’ results from the studyAuthors’ solutions from the study or articleDo I need to memorize my speech?You need to know your speech like the back of your hand. You need to be able to say your speech without looking at your index card. This speech grade is worth 10% and we have important guests coming—you must do your best.What if I don’t want to give the speech? I’ll just take the zero. I’m afraid I’ll faint or get sick I’m so nervous!You’re not the only one. Everyone is nervous about making a speech in front of others. You can’t let fear overcome you and beat you. You must figure out how to perform yourspeech even though you are afraid and very nervous. Feel the fear YET do what you must do! You’ll feel great afterwards.Does each team make its own Power Point presentation?No. Ms. B made one for the entire class to use. Most of each team’s information will be listed on this one power point presentation. This power point will be on Ms. B’s website so you can rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse.What if my team mates give bad speeches but I give a good one?Everyone will get the grade he or she “earned.” What if I’m sick on speech day? What if my car breaks down? What if an earthquake hits the Oakton community?Presentation will still occur.What if I don’t want to dress up for the speech? Will I have points taken away?No. You just won’t get the extra credit points. Can we bring index cards with us?Yes, but be careful you don’t read from them. You can glance at them to remember what you want to say next, but as soon as you start reading them, you are quickly losing points.I volunteered to do an extra slide. Can I read off the slide?No. Face your audience.
