Drugs in our communityJoanna HershJennifer Jones Alanna TaberSarah ThompsonProblem…z Drug/Alcohol use amongst the community youth.Plan of Action:Providing our services as a court mandated program in place of sending them to a juvenile dentition facility. This includes anyone who has been arrested for alcohol or drug use, abuse and/or possession.Program Description z After school program that will be offered from 2-11 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 9a.m-7pm on Saturday and Sunday.z Participants must fulfill their court ordered hours within a certain time period to be determined by the courts.z The program will offer basketball, swimming, open field for soccer, football and many more outdoor sports, as well as tutoring, mentoring and counseling.Program Description (cont.) z The staff will consist of tutors, mentors, counselors, coaches and teachers.z To decrease the usage of drugs and educate the youth on what's out there for them. z This program will be offered in dense areas of youth drug/alcohol users.Influential Mentorsz Senior Citizens z Parents z Teachers z Former youth users z Religious Communityz Local BusinessSenior Citizens z Caring seniors who are in a position to assist youth based on their own life experiences can bridge the generational gap and help youth discuss any hardships that relate to them.Parentsz Parents of former users can advise the youth on how to stop of the addiction and mentor the youth to find alternate activities to be successful.Teachersz Notify the youth about what other activities are out there for them. z Educate them on the physiological, psychological, and social effects of drug use and offer rehabilitation and prevention help programs.Former youth usersz Educate current youth users on the negative effects of drugs and explain how a successful life can’t be achieved while using drugs.z Discuss the circumstances that drove them to starting using and how they broke their habit.Religious Communityz Offer mentoring, prayer and support.z Have people available allowing the youth to talk about problems or good decision making.Local Businessz Allow the youth the chance to earn money while occupying their time and learning different responsibilities through job placement assistance.Clear Statementz To provide an interactive, social setting that will offer entertainment, school assistance, and a nurturing environment to troubled youth in the community.Facts…z Alcoholism is a deadly disease.• liver disease• cardiovascular disease• neurological damage • Cancerz States prohibit minors to purchase alcohol- 1988Facts…z Psychiatric Problems• anxiety• depression• antisocial personality disorderz Depression• An average of 2.2 million youths experience depressive episodes between the ages of 12-17.
