Human Relations PSYC 3301 Section 001- Spring 2010 MWF 10:00am-10:50am Life Science Building Room 100 (LS 100) Instructor: Nicolette P. Lopez, Ph.D. Office: Life Sciences Building Room 308 Phone: (817) 272-5480 E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: Wednesday 11:00 am – 12:00 pm or by appointment Course Content This course is designed to provide a survey of topics relating to the study of human relations. Some of the topics we will discuss include communication, problem solving, decision making, conflict and change as they occur in individuals and in group relations. The structure of class sessions will be lecture however open discussion is strongly encouraged. Students are expected to attend class prepared for discussion and interaction. Learning Outcomes Successful completion of this course will require students to: (a) learn and become familiar with the basic concepts pertaining to human relations, (b) learn and understand how to apply concepts to enhance relationships at work, and (c) develop and refine the knowledge and skills to function more effectively in today’s organizations. Students who successfully complete the course will understand the foundations of and current issues in human relations. In addition, students will gain insight about their own interpersonal style thus enabling personal growth and self-enhancement related to relationships on the job. Required Text DuBrin, A. J. (2009). Prentice Hall Publishers ISBN 13: 9780135019443 Communications When communicating with faculty members and other professionals, all students are expected to communicate in a professional and formal manner regardless of the communications media (phone, e-mail, face-to-face, etc.). This includes addressing one’s audience using his or her proper title, using proper grammar and using proper spelling. How one delivers a message is often as important as the message itself. Thus, I expect students to communicate professionally. This includes, but is not limited to, using proper greetings and an appropriate tone. Communications deemed inappropriate will not receive a response. Electronic Mail UT-Arlington provides all students with an official UT-Arlington electronic mail (e-mail) address. UT-Arlington and this instructor will use students’ UT-Arlington e-mail accounts for official communication. All communications regarding this course will be sent to students’ UT-Arlington e-mail accounts. Cellular Telephones and Other Electronic Devices Do not leave your cellular telephone (cell phone) or other electronic device (blackberry, or other electronic communication device) turned on during class. Even on vibrate mode these devices are very distracting to me and to other students.Evaluation Grades for the course will be computed as follows: Quiz 1………………………………………….10 Points Quiz 2………………………………………….10 Points Quiz 3………………………………………….10 Points Quiz 4………………………………………….10 Points Final Exam……………………………………. 20 Points Development Plan……………………...………30 Points Class Participation……………………………..20 Points The course grades will be assigned as follows: A 90 – 100 Points B 80 – 89 Points C 70 – 79 Points D 60 – 69 Points F 0 – 59 Points Quizzes and Final Exam There will be four (4) quizzes and one (1) comprehensive final exam. Both quizzes and the final exam will cover material from lectures, assignments, discussions, videos, presentations, additional readings, and the corresponding readings in the textbook. All will consist of multiple-choice items. A student arriving late after the scheduled class start time on a test date will not be allowed to take the test after the first test is returned. Students are required to provide their own Scantron answer sheets and pencils for the exams. The lowest QUIZ score will be dropped. If a quiz is missed, that will be the score that is dropped. Any additional quizzes missed will result 0 points for the quiz grade. There are a total of 30 points to be earned through quiz performance. The final exam is worth 20 points. If a quiz is canceled due to inclement weather or other unexpected reasons, it will take place in the subsequent scheduled class time and at the same place as originally scheduled. Missed Quizzes Because the lowest quiz score is dropped, this instructor will only give makeup quizzes due to extraordinary circumstances and only when official paper documentation is provided (court documentation, bereavement leave notification, etc.). Makeup quizzes will ONLY be administered at 7:00am on Monday, May 17th, 2010. A student who misses a work assignment or other project because of an observance of a religious holy day will be given the opportunity to complete the work missed within a reasonable time after the absence provided the student has properly notified the instructor. To meet the proper notification requirements, students must notify the instructor in writing of classes in which they will be absent in observance of a religious holy day. Notification must be made within the first 15 class days and either personally delivered, acknowledged and dated by the instructor, or sent certified mail, return receipt requested. The student may not be penalized for these excused absences, but the instructor may appropriately respond if the student fails to complete satisfactorily the missed assignment within a reasonable amount of time after the excused absence. A "religious holy day" means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Section 11.20 of the Tax Code. Class Participation Class participation includes attendance, contributing to class discussions, and possible in class or outside of class assignments not listed on this document. Class attendance and involvement is strongly encouraged. Much of psychology is about human interactions. To learn psychology, it helps to interact and personalize it. If you havedifficulty speaking up in class, see me and we will work out a solution. You will get a maximum of 20 points for coming to class, asking questions, making comments, discussing topics, or taking an informed stand and disagreeing with the instructor. Promptness is expected.
