VI Significances of War of 1812 Rough Lecture Notes going to be a pres elect during the A S acts the federalists select john adams and CC Pinckney candidates for pres and vice the republicans select jefferson and aaron Burr for pres and vice pres this election was marred by personal attacks federalists argue that if jefferson becomes president he would bring the political radicalism of the french revolution to the united states accusations against jeffersons religious views that he was athiest jefferson believed in diesim he was a deist a deist believes that once a universe is created then it steps back and does not involve themselves personally in the dealings of that universe adams did not escape the mud he was accused by the republians to be someone who is a secret monarchist and someone that increases the national debt without reason there were charges of sexual misconduct against adams the election result was very close in 1800 the republicans win in the electoral college however there is a tie between jefferson and burr in 1800 the deciding body for a tie is the house of representatives 5 days 36 ballads there is still a tie one of the main actors in this drama is alexander hamilton he is using all of his influence to support thomas jefferson jefferson becomes the third president of the united states the election of 1800 is segnificant for a couple reasons possibly for the first time in world history there is a peaceful transition of political power election often referred to the revolution of the 1800s seemed to prove the concept of the loyal opposition jefferson did not aggree with adams but each side realizes that the opposition is loyal to the country those who are out of power represent these loyal opposition pointed out there had to be an ammendment to the ballads of election in 1804 12th ammendment said there were going to be separate ballads for president and vice president now the election is over there is uneasiness about what thomas jefferson is going to do people thought that jefferson might dispand the national bank jefferson tried to ease the fears in his inogoural speech jefferson is considered to be one of the most intellectual presidents the US has ever had one of the first things he did was set up an expidition for exploration he granted presidential pardons to those editors that were convicted by the sedition act he reduced taxes and reduced spending there are two noticable events during his term One is the Marbury v Madison court case est principle of judicial review The second is the Louisiana Purchase MvM once the results of the election are in the federalists know they are going to lose the executive branch and congress all of a sudden 2 of the 3 branches of government are now republicas judiciary act of 1801 is to expand the branch of judiciary why federalists want federalists to be in positions of power it is a naked grab for power with the only branch that the federalists still control congress passes this law then positions have to be appointed most of it had been taken care of by the eve of the inaguration just signing the paperwork isnt enough the paperwork has to be delivered by the secretary of state several dozen appointments are not delivered when the new sec of state madison comes in to office and those appointments are stashed away one of the people on these appointments is marbury marbury sued madison for a supreme court order for the delivery of the appointments marshall is the supreme court justice Marshall knows that if he passes this lawsuit then the president can just say no then the court comes off as weak and inefficient the court rules that by article 13 of the judiciary act of 1783 is unconstitutional rather than show weakness marshall has increased the power of the judiciary court he is say that it is unconstitutional for one branch to order another to do something in 1802 a new judiciary act is passed that basically excludes article 13 The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 Thomas jefferson sends a representative to france to maybe purchase a small portion of the louisiana territory in 1803 jefferson is presented with the opportunity to double the size of the US The french were asking a reasonable price 15 million jefferson has a dilemma If a power is not specifically granted than it does not exist buying land is not one of those powers because of this offer he is forced to look for implied power he settles on the power to establish treaties jefferson goes against one of the core beliefs of republicans the political party he helped established and he is going to take some hits because of his decision of the Louisiana Purchase Once the senate ratifies the treaty the louisiana territory becomes part of the united states jefferson sends the louis and clark expidition It wasn t until this expidition that hope for the water route to the pacific ocean was crushed His first administration was deemed to be successful Jefferson was popular He is going into the next election with high popularity 1804 Burr is vice pres of the US he gets involved with a dissagreement with alexander hamilton their relationship was to the point where hamilton insulted Burr burr responded hamilton by challenging him to a duel summer of 1804 hamilton is no fan of dueling they engage in a duel results in hamiltons death hamilton dies in confrontation with Burr In July of 1804 Hamilton was not too popular but the nation was shocked when he died Burr is forced to flee because of this murder he heads out to the south As result of the duel they renomonate jefferson for president select george benton for vice on federalist side Pinkney for pres and someone else for vice Jefferson takes a beating again for his religious beliefs another thing that comes to light during the election is that jefferson had very close relations with one of his slaves sally hemmings despite this jefferson
