of 1824 Rough Lecture Notes This immediate post war period marked a time of unusual peace and nationality 1816 1824 era of good feelings US beginning to get respect from other foreign countries from this point on the US and Britian are going to start building a better relationship three areas of discussion political economical diplomatic politically end of the war of 1812 marked the end of the federalist party 1816 federalist still nominated a president and got clobored in 1820 one president nominated by republicans republicans are the only viable political party in this election economic nationalism US is growing both in statehood and economic expansion US in the process of building a market revolution extends east west north and south the west growing quickly in population during the era of good feelings 4 states came into the union Indiana illinoise alabama and Mississippi This growth westward also stimulated the need for improved transportation up to this point roads were rough pathways roads were primary east west transportation going to be improvements in transportation in EGF the first gov financed road was constructed the cumberland road connects baltimore with the west stretches all the way to vandalia Illinoise connects the east and the west easier transport of goods and people other transportation was with canals what begins in this post war period is a boost in man made canals waterways for transportation by 1837 there are 3000 miles of these man made canals most are relatively short the biggest and most important is the erie canal began in 1817 1825 entirely in the state of new york financed by the state of new york over 350 miles long connect the city of albany new york and Buffalo new york buffalo on lake erie the eire canal connects the northeast and the northwest the erie canal in essence connects the atlantic ocean to the great lakes product and people can be moved entirely by water from atlantic ocean to the great lakes huge economic link between the northeast and the northwest the other important fact is that it lowered costs for transportation goods being transported more quickly water transportation is quicker and more economical costs can go down time important element for people traveling 2 weeks less than traveling by land unintended consequence was that is isolated the south economically the south is becoming isolated by the time come to the civil war northeast and the northwest are such good partners that they band together transportation revolution in the EGF other improvement in water travel was steam boats the first successful steam boat was the claremont because it was successful more steam boats follow the most significant change is that the steam boat can travel against the current steam boats increase efficiency they also help lower costs travel is more efficient all of these things are part of the transportation revolution By 1835 there were over 300 steam boats in use the US underwent an early industrial revolution american factories began to produce textiles and other goods americas own factories began to produce goods ship building americans began to get into building ships more industrialization began in the north east there was a lobor supply early industry needed water supply there was the water supply necessary there was the money available to invest in the factories many reasons industrialization first takes place in the northeast by 1860 the total manufacturing output of the south did not equal the manufacturing output of massachusettes the south remained agricultural going to be a huge detriment in the civil war change taking place in teh US the US is growing physically transportation revolution and early industrial revolution this has an effect on the republican party the republican party is beginning to split old republicans want to stay loyal to the founding beliefs of the party want to keep strict interpretation of the constitution opposition to the naitonal bank belief in the laissez faire economics states rights young republicans are adopting a different attitude they recognize that economic change taking place they look at the kind of change that is taking place in the US and begin to adopt some new ideas They support the idea of a protective tariff law passed by congress that is going to benefit one element of economy over another Young republicans support a national bank they think it is good for the country attitudes within the republican party is changing yr are in favor of using federal tax dollars for internal improvement construction of bridges and roads and other things belief that the improvements will help the overall economy by 1816 the young republicans are powerful enough to pass the first true protective tariff in american history protective tariff is a high tariff the goal is to try to protect the infant industrial sector of the northeast foreign competitor is the one that has to pay that tariff because it is a tariff on foreign goods so that the US products will be cheaper young republicans helped push this through congress in 1816 Calhoun votes in favor in the tariff american industry wasn t going to need protection for a very long time is what calhoun believes another area that young republicans influenced had to do with the bank of the US bank of the US was established in 1791 chartered for 20 yrs in 1811 the bank asked for a recharter and the bank was not renewed bank of the US went out of business all of the controls on state banks and private banks is gone period of economic chaos while the naitonal bank does not exist the biggest problem the bank ceased to exist is that the US went into war right after the bank was gone economic nightmare for the federal government to try to win a war by 1816 YR have enough power to create a second national bank created the second national bank with a 20 year charter once the new bank comes into existence it does help to restore some stability Diplomatic nationalism the nation is still young many successes diplomatically the US is still untested EGF is going to bring some significant
