BAE2023 Particle Physical Characteristics Lab Experiment-1 Size, Shape, and Volume Date Objective: To determine physical characteristics such as size, shape, and volume of particles as might be used for sorting.Introduction: Physical attributes such as size, shape, volume, density, porosity are crucial for quality control of food material. Size is important attribute which helps in screening of solids from foreign material, grading and evaluating quality. Size of foods is measured using micrometer or caliper. The shape attribute is crucial for heat and mass transfer calculations, separating foreign particle, and grading of food material. The shape is expressed in terms of sphericity. Procedure:1. Select 2 products to measure its physical characteristics. 2. Determine size by taking three perpendicular lengths “equivalent diameters” of 5 samples of the each product. 3. Measure the product’s volume by water displacement.4. Compute the product’s volume and sphericity using the appropriate formula from the textbook.5. Compute the mean and standard deviation of each dimension, volume, and sphericity. 6. Take the same measurements and make the same computations by above procedure for a metal object of regular shape i.e., sphere or cube.Reference: R. Stroshine and D. Haman, Physical Properties of Agricultural Materials and Food Products, Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA (1994).Please answer the following questions:Question 1) Compare the values of size and shape obtained for your samples with the published values. State, fully, the reference you used! Show comparative data! Justify your conclusion with possible sources of errors if any. Question2) Compare measured water displacement volume with volume computed using measured length dimensions by calculating the error. Show comparative data! Justify your conclusion with possible sources of errors if any.Question3) Report the measurements and results obtained for metal object of uniform dimension?Data sheets Group Number: Sample Name:Sample Name: S.Noh ( ) r ( ) Volume (Vp) ( ) Surface area (Sp) ( )12345Sample Name:S.No Radius of sphere having same volume as sample ( )Surface area of sphere (Ss) ( )Sphericity (Ss/Sp)12345Sample Name:DimensionsMean ( ) Standard Deviation ( )h ( ) m ( )Volume ( )Surface Area ( )Sphericity ( ) rhData sheets Group Number: Sample Name:Sample Name:S.Noa ( ) b ( ) c ( )Volume ( ) Sphericity12345Sample No.DimensionsMean ( ) Standard Deviation( )a bc Volume ( )SphericityTerms NotationsMajor Dia.(length) (mm) aIntermediate Dia.
