NOTE: Many departments require a grade of C orhigher for a grade of Satisfactory and for credit. See your academic advisor.Course Difficulty CS302 can be a very challenging course. This is an understatement for some students.Don’t be misled by the course name, Introduction to Programming. Consider CS302 tobe like a 300 level math course. The course requires students to have strong algebra andproblem solving skills and takes considerable time outside of class.Course FormatLarge Lecture Lectures 1 and 2 are a large lecture format (~100 students each).There are 150 minutes of lecture and 50 minutes of discussion per week. A single curveis used to grade students in lectures 1 and 2.Small Lecture Lectures 3 through 29 are a small lecture format (~25 students each) and are intendedfor CS majors and engineers.There are 150 minutes of lecture per week. These lectures are taught at a faster pace, andoptional material is covered. Each TA has a separate grading curve composed only of thestudents in her or his section.Either format prepares students for the next programming course, CS367.Course WorkLessons and class participation(9%)Lessons focus on specific concepts and contain programming as well as written parts.Lessons are graded on a scale of 0 to 3. Each lesson is worth 1 or 2% toward the finalgrade. This is subject to change depending on the number of lessons completed. Classparticipation will be worth 1% and will be determined by your TA.Assignments (16%) Assignments are comprehensive projects that require substantial time and effort.Assignments are graded on a point scale. Partial credit is given for partial completion andaccuracy. No late work is accepted for a grade. Extensions are given forcircumstances, such as illness, when we are notified well in advance of the due date.Students are also responsible for verifying that they have correctly turned in their work(we’ll show you how).Collaboration Collaboration on lessons is not allowed. Collaboration on either assignment is allowedbut discouraged. You are forewarned that collaboration may cause you to do poorlyin the class. The lessons and assignments are intended to give you the practice andexperience necessary to understand the course material. We will expect that you havedone your own work, and we will be testing your knowledge of the lessons and theassignments on the exams. Three are on the first floor of the CS building in rooms 1351,1355, 1370 and there is one in the basement in room B240. They open from 7am to 1ameach day.Lab consultants are scheduled during the most popular hours to assist students with avariety of computing system issues. For example: How do I print my file? Where aremy printouts? How do I check my email? Where’s Netscape Navigator, etc.Also, most consultants have a great deal of programming experience and can be asked tohelp find some types of errors in your programs. Syntax errors are like grammar errorsand are often hard to find for beginning programmers. Consultants can help you planyour search to find these errors in less time. They can also help you decipher what theerror messages mean.Consultants are not personal tutors and they are not responsible for ensuring that yourprogram works. They will try to help as many students as possible and may direct you tocomplete are particular task before assisting you further. Please see your TA or considera tutor for more extensive help on your programs.Reminders • CS302 can be a very challenging course. Plan on having time in your schedule to doa substantial amount of work outside of class.• Notify us within the first two weeks of classes of any religious observances that mayinterfere with course requirements.• Notify us as soon as you become ill if you need to request an extension.
