(pg.351) It uses a single measure of economic development such as GDP capita. 2. What is economic development? Social development? (pg.352) Economic development is the most widely used measure of economic development is the total value of goods produced in a country divided by the population of the country, typically measured as GDP(Gross Domestic Product) per capita or GNI (Gross National Income) per capita correcting for purchasing power party (PPP). Social Development- To enrich the classificatory scheme, a second dimension, grounded in the types of organizational, technological, and attitudinal development. To measure the mix, there's an index that has been calculated for each country to reflect the pervasiveness of: Knowledge(measured at an adult literacy rate), Urban Life Style(measured as a percent of population in urban areas), Health(measured as longevity and mortality rates to age 5), Communication Capabilities(measured as cell phones per capita and computers per capita) 3. What do Developed Countries, Global North, First World describe? What are examples? (pg.352) Developed Countries, Global North, First World describe counties with the highest levels of GDP per capita as well as they also rank high on the social dimensions of development. Ex. United States, Japan, and Canada 4. When did the term Third World come about? (pg.353) During the cold war identifying those states that claimed they were "nonaligned".Now the term refers to all developing countries 5. What are transitional developed countries? (pg.354) The levels of economic or social development in these countries put them "in the middle". They are called transitional developed countries to recognize the their middle range on one or both dimensions of development 6. What goal do developed countries pursue? (pg.355) the goal of prosperity7. How do they achieve prosperity? (pg.355) They rely on a mixed political economy. Private actors are encouraged to use theirresources aggressively to acquire desired goods, to produce goods, and to maximize their profits 8. Explain Social Market Systems. (pg.356) the state encourages an extensive free market economy but is also committed to social welfare distribution and economic regulation 9. What is the Human Development Index? (pg.359) to reflect the quality enjoyed by citizens in a country 10. What have the Global North been successful in?
