Beverly Samples September 1 2013 Biology 101 Chimps genetically close to humans In the article Chimps genetically close to humans by Richard Black with BBC News the conclusions reached by Dr Derek Wildman stated that a chimpanzee s genetic makeup is 99 4 similar to that of a human Dr Wildman also concluded that chimpanzees and humans shared an ancestor approximately six million years ago Dr Wildman and his team from Wayne State University are in favor of moving chimpanzees along with other similar apes into the same genus that humans are classified under The team developed these claims after studying DNA codes of chimpanzees apes along with other primates and using mice as their control This study resulted in the conclusion that apes and humans are as closely related as a horse is to a donkey showing very insignificant differences The only link to whether this evidence is trustworthy is Dr Wildman and his team members publishing their findings within the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences My confidence in these claims can only be increased if the experiments and studies have been repeated multiple times by various scientists from an unbiased source I would need to see that these results could be reached numerous times with a clear description of the procedure data and peer review I would like to see more specifics about the tests that were run and precisely how the conclusions were reached in relation to the test subjects I would also be interested in seeing the sample size of each species that was tested and the consistency of the tests that were run to see the amount of controlled variables
