Course Setup UPP594 F10 Topics in Urban Planning & Policy - Sustainable Development Working title Survey of Sustainable Development Techniques Instructors: Jim Van der Kloot, Land Revitalization Coordinator, U. S. Environmental Protection Agency Eugene Goldfarb, Principal, Great Lakes Environmental Planning (former Midwest Environmental Officer, USDHUD) Environmental policy is rapidly evolving in the U.S. Over the last thirty years, our efforts have been focused end-of-the pipeline controls. This approach has greatly reduced the emissions from smokestacks, discharges to surface waters, and uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. However, we are now faced with a complex realm of new environmental challenges, and they relate to the manner in which we develop land, construct buildings, and consume resources. Our development patterns are responsible for significant degradation of the air, water, and land. This puts urban planners on the forefront in implementing development practices that provide for a positive social environment along with a clean environment. The overarching theme of this course will be Sustainable Development. We will begin with an overview of sustainable practices and barriers and how we got to this point, and then discuss current practice in many functional areas, finishing up with addressing the market barriers to sustainable practice. The course will feature extensive outside guest speakers of exciting practitioners with cutting edge approaches. There will be extensive class participation in the form of weekly discussion of the preceding week’s topic and each student is expected to lead the last half hour of the class with their own class project.
