Talking Points Frida Frida’s relationship with Diego Frida seemed to be a sensible and independent woman, and since I was not aware of her story I did not believe it when I saw that she fell for Diego. Their promise to be loyal to each other was a bit questionable since we know of Diego’s tendencies but it seems that there is a lot of love between them. Their on and off relationship indicated that there was indeed love there, but as a man that Diego is, he can’t control his head. I was surprised to see how in the end they ended up together after so many fights and breakups. Their relationship was very unhealthy but somehow, and I still don’t understand how, it worked. Morbid art As a result of her many experiences with Diego and friends, Frida found time to draw. She was definitely an excellent artist as her husband himself proclaimed, but her work was gruesome and communicated her distraught feelings. I feel that maybe it was a way to oppose her husband who was a mural artist with a different genre of paintings. Instead she evoked her feelings of dislike and distress with small paintings that she never really meant to display, like the dress in the city and the miscarriage. Because of the intensity of her paintings, you can see her suffering and it’s another reason why I don’t understand how they still ended up together. Sexuality I was completely unexpectedly intrigued by Frida’s sexuality. I can see how she would want to get Diego back by being with other men, but I was not expecting for her to have relationships with women as well, especially one who happened to have been with her husband. That’s kind of disgusting actually. At the beginning, and because of how she asserted her independence, I thought that she might end up a lesbian. I never thought that such suffering for a man can lead a woman to do this, but I see now that it happens. Its pretty cool though how she could seduce a woman, even if she got it from her husband.MIT OpenCourseWarehttp://ocw.mit.edu SP.400 / WGS.400 Special Topics in Women & Gender Studies Seminar: Latina Women's Voices Spring 2010 For information about citing these materials or our Terms of Use, visit:
