Daily Tar Heel - Running of the Tar Heels http://www.dailytarheel.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticlePrint...1 of 2 9/25/2007 8:49 AM< Back | HomeRunning of the Tar HeelsGeneral admission is problematic; we have suggestionsBy: Editorial BoardPosted: 9/25/07Dear new ticket policy,Unfortunately, you HAVE NOT been selected as anything close to a decent distribution system. The new ticket distribution system was unveiled Friday, revealing the plans for causing UNC students heartbreak from November to March. We could once again complain about a new distribution policy by pointing out all its flaws - and there are quite a few - but at this point it would just feel like deja vu.Instead we would like to lay out the distribution policy that we would like to see.Pay close attention, Clint Gwaltney. The powers that be seem married to the new online system of allocating tickets, so that has to stay in place. We would love to go back to the bracelet system, as it would address complaints about the randomness of thesystem. But in order to present an option that might actually have a chance of being implemented, some sacrifices needed to be made. The main change we want to see has to do with the actual distribution of tickets. Instead of simply printing them out, we propose that the tickets be held in the Carolina Athletic Association office for a period of time before the game - say, three days - and students have to stop by to pick them up.Because a lot of people are already near the Student Union for classes, this doesn't impose an undue burden on those who live off campus but still requires a little effort to get tickets. For those people in CAA who will complain about having to man the office for the duration of these distribution periods, think of it as the price you pay for your guaranteed tickets to every game. The tickets should be first-come, first-served, and each student would be randomly assigned beforehand to the upper level, lower level or risers to avoid a mad rush to the CAA office for lower-level tickets when distribution starts. That way, group seating - one of the biggest frustrations people had with last year's system - would be possible; friends could visit the office together and get seats next to one another. It also allows for a standby line that can enter before the game starts. Three hours before game time, anyDaily Tar Heel - Running of the Tar Heels http://www.dailytarheel.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticlePrint...2 of 2 9/25/2007 8:49 AMtickets that haven't been picked up can be distributed to people in line at a designated location. With a standby line and group seating possible, there is no need for tickets to be general admission, which is sure to cause a logistical nightmare as people try to find open seats. Also, a One Card should be required for every ticket; if students want to pick up two tickets, they need two One Cards.People aren't likely to give up their One Cards without expecting to go along, so it will help ensure all the seats are filled. We understand that people will probably find something that they don't like about our plan. That is kind of the nature of the beast. However, this is at the very least an improvement on what the athletics department has proposed.© Copyright 2007 Daily Tar
