793 4622 Home phone 325 672 9905 before 10 pm Office Hours M F 3 00 5 00 pm COURSE OBJECTIVE 1 To review the fundamentals of Algebra 2 To review exponents radicals factoring and rational expressions 3 To learn about many types of functions and properties of these functions including linear quadratic polynomial rational and other special functions 4 To understand how to solve applied problems dealing with the aforementioned functions 5 To learn about shifting reflecting and stretching graphs 6 To learn how to solve systems of linear equations by different methods and to be able to solve some applied problems by setting up and solving a system of linear equations 7 To learn about radicals and complex numbers IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT ANY ACADEMIC DISHONESTY attempted or successful cheating CAN RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE AND OR REMOVAL FROM THE COURSE AT INSTRUCTOR S DISCRETION COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students whose academic placement results indicate a need for pre college development in math reading or writing must register for and continually enroll in the corresponding Developmental Studies DEVS course s until it is passed with a grade of C or better McMurry 2006 2007 catalog page 81 The DEVS 0330 is also required to make a Post test score of 70 or higher The Post test will be administered at the end of the semester ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend every class and their assigned lab A cumulative absence in excess of 5 hours of class lab or an absence of more than three consecutive hours will result in a possible withdrawal from the course Any absence can be made up by viewing a videotape of the missed material The videotapes are available for your viewing pleasure in the AEC only tapes are not able to be checked out Tapes should be viewed as soon as possible to enable the students understanding of the material for the next class Three tardies will count as one unexcused absence PREPARATION PARTICIPATION GROUP WORK The student is expected to have read the topics being discussed during class You will be required to work in small groups to reinforce understanding of the material from lectures You will be graded based on your participation as well as your group s work TUTORIALS You will be required to spend one hour a week in the AEC You need to sign in on the computer at the entrance and also with the math tutor assigned to your lab group after you meet with the tutor then you will work on the assigned computers in the AEC When you come to the AEC for extra help not during your assigned lab you will still log in on the entrance computer then you will need to sign the Intro Intermediate log book at the front desk Make sure that you sign a sheet for Intermediate Algebra with Mrs St Jean s name on it at the front desk don t forget to sign out as well QUIZZES Students should be prepared to take a quiz every class during the first two minutes of class so don t be late Quizzes missed due to an absence will receive a grade of 0 Arriving to class after the quiz has started will result in a grade of 0 Quizzes can be retaken for a higher grade by appointment only EXAMS All exams will be closed book no textbook no notebook The final exam will cover all course material The Post Test will be counted as half of the final exam grade REMEMBER you are required to make a minimum of a 70 on the post test to move into a college level math course EXAM REVIEWS Will be provided before all tests either on the computer or a paper copy We will not spend class time going over the review You are expected to get help from your instructor out side of class or from the tutors in the AEC HOMEWORK Homework will be assigned every class and should be completed before the next class to be prepared for the quiz you will need to get help before the class time and quiz You must show your work to receive any credit for quizzes and any book assignments Book assignments can be checked with the back of the book or with a math tutor using the Student Solutions Guide in the AEC GRADING All work will be graded and will contribute to your course grade based on the following weights Exams 5 10 Final Exam Homework for this course The TI 83plus is also very useful in your college level math course that is required for your degree plan i e don t sell it I will demonstrate some basic functions of the TI 83plus in
