praying 2 Transition How might it be possible to have all these elements present and still not worship doing it for wrong motives worshiping the wrong thing the wrong person your mind is elsewhere Today we want to focus on what makes a worshipful experience as demonstrated by those who came to worship the baby Jesus 3 Bible Study 3 1 Worship the One Who Is Worthy Listen for what would make this a good news report the who when where and what of the events Matthew 2 1 2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the time of King Herod Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him Who When Where What Jesus King Herod Magi King of the Jews During reign of King Herod Bethlehem in Judea Jerusalem Star in the east Magi looking for the new king wanted to worship Him The Magi knew of the king of the Jews because of the special star they saw what did the not know where He was born when He was born who He actually was that He was the Messiah the Sent One that He was not a political king 1 12 29 2002 Leading to Worship Note the title they gave to Jesus King of the Jews why would this have been alarming to Herod Herod was the king and not too recently born If there was someone threatening his throne he wanted to deal with it Maybe they knew some piece of intrigue he did not He had been paranoid that he had some of his own sons killed to do away with threats to his authority Consider What was the point of the worship by the Magi Could they truly worship the Savior They were looking for a newly born future king Maybe they did not worship Him as Savior But they wanted to pay homage they believed this new king to be worthy of praise they worshiped to the extent their knowledge allowed Jesus is worthy of our praise devotion worship 3 2 Avoid Pretense Listen for evidence that Herod was disturbed by the visit of the Magi Matthew 2 3 8 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him 4 When he had called together all the people s chief priests and teachers of the law he asked them where the Christ was to be born 5 In Bethlehem in Judea they replied for this is what the prophet has written 6 But you Bethlehem in the land of Judah are by no means least among the rulers of Judah for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said Go and make a careful search for the child As soon as you find him report to me so that I too may go and worship him What statements indicate Herod s being disturbed local officials community registered their fear of his being upset Herod begins to work intrigue getting various groups to accomplish his purposes Religious leaders are sought for info Magi met with secretly instructed to report to him Magi told to report location so he also could go and worship the new king his true purpose was to find location to do away with this threat to his throne Herod deceitfully used religion for personal ends In what ways do people do this in our society today join a church to look good to gain a good image in the eyes of others go to church to make business or social contacts participate in various church activities to establish a position of power so they can play on the church baseball team to meet other singles for the inexpensive church dinners they like the music 2 12 29 2002 Leading to Worship Herod wanted to keep other people from showing allegiance to this new king what kinds of things might keep you from truly worshiping when you come to worship services distractions people talking personal problems health problems the environment too hot cold uncomfortable bright dim style of worship music poor preaching wandering mind falling asleep Some of these things you cannot change but what can you deal with ask for God s help to set personal problems aside sit in a different location to avoid talking around you take notes in order to help pay attention get more sleep outside of the worship service look for ways of focusing on God not on the particular style of music that doesn t fit your personal favorite 3 3 Show Reverent Devotion Listen for the specific things the Magi did after Herod spoke with them Matthew 2 9 12 After they had heard the king they went on their way and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was 10 When they saw the star they were overjoyed 11 On coming to the house they saw the child with his mother Mary and they bowed down and worshiped him Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod they returned to their country by another route What specific actions do we see concerning the Magi Continued to follow the star Found Jesus with Mary Bowed and worshiped Jesus Gave Jesus gifts Returned home W willing Bypassed Herod O orderly offering open What qualities listed in our original elements of worship were present as part of the worship of the Magi R S H I P 3 reverent respectful regular singing seeking honoring hearing hopeful irreverent NOT inspiring individual pious peaceful praising praying 12 29 2002 Leading to Worship Why do you think this was true worship the effort they expended to find Jesus the quality of the gifts we infer their attitude from their actions They did not come focusing on their own importance They did not come to try to impress folks in the little town of Bethlehem They did not come as a ploy to make points with Herod The centered their attention on Jesus Some significance can be inferred from the nature of the gifts Gold a royal gift for a king Frankincense a symbol of Jesus death rising as incense to satisfy God s holiness Myrrh used for embalming symbolic of Jesus …
