12/29/2002 Leading to Worship1. MotivateMake an acrostic for the word worship. Think up words that apply to worship which startwith each letter of the wordW willing, O orderly, offering, openR reverent, respectful, regularS singing, seekingH honoring, hearing, hopefulI irreverent NOT, inspiring, individualP pious, peaceful, praising, praying2. TransitionHow might it be possible to have all these elements present and still not worship?- doing it for wrong motives- worshiping the wrong thing, the wrong person- your mind is elsewhereToday  we want to focus on what makes a worshipful experience – as demonstrated by those who came to worship the baby Jesus.3. Bible Study3.1 Worship the One Who Is WorthyListen for what would make this a good news report … the who, when, where, and what of the events.Matthew 2:1-2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem [2] and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." Who? Jesus, King Herod, Magi, King of the JewsWhen? During reign of King HerodWhere? Bethlehem in Judea, JerusalemWhat? Star in the east – Magi looking for the new king – wanted to worship HimThe Magi knew of the king of the Jews because of the special star they saw, what did the not know?- where He was born- when He was born- who He actually was- that He was the Messiah – the “Sent One”- that He was not a political king1Note: try to savethis list forreference later onin the lesson12/29/2002 Leading to WorshipNote the title they gave to Jesus, “King of the Jews” – why would this have been alarming to Herod?- Herod was the king, and not too recently born- If there was someone threatening his throne, he wanted to deal with it- Maybe they knew some piece of intrigue he did not- He had been paranoid that he had some of his own sons killed to do away with threats to his authorityConsider: What was the point of the worship by the Magi? Could they truly worship the Savior? They were looking for a newly born future king.- Maybe they did not worship Him as Savior- But, they wanted to pay homage- they believed this new “king” to be worthy of praise- they worshiped to the extent their knowledge allowed Jesus is worthy of our praise, devotion, worship3.2 Avoid PretenseListen for evidence that Herod was disturbed by the visit of the Magi.Matthew 2:3-8 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. [4] When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. [5] "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: [6] " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least amongthe rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'" [7] Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. [8] He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." What statements indicate Herod’s being disturbed?- local officials, community registered their fear of his being upset- Herod begins to work intrigue, getting various groups to accomplish his purposes- Religious leaders are sought for info, Magi met with secretly, instructed to report to him- Magi told to report location, so he also could “go and worship” the new king- his true purpose was to find location to do away with this threat to his throneHerod deceitfully used religion for personal ends. In what ways do people do this in our society today?- join a church to look good, to gain a good image in the eyes of others- go to church to make business or social contacts- participate in various church activities to establish a position of power- so they can play on the church baseball team- to meet other singles- for the inexpensive church dinners- they like the music212/29/2002 Leading to WorshipHerod wanted to keep other people from showing allegiance to this “new king” – what kinds of things might keep you from truly worshiping when you come to worship services?- distractions (people talking, personal problems, health problems)- the environment (too hot, cold, uncomfortable, bright, dim)- style of worship, music- poor preaching- wandering mind- falling asleepSome of these things you cannot change – but what can you deal with?- ask for God's help to set personal problems aside- sit in a different location to avoid talking around you- take notes in order to help pay attention- get more sleep outside of the worship service- look for ways of focusing on God, not on the particular style of music that doesn’tfit your personal favorite3.3 Show Reverent DevotionListen for the specific things the Magi did after Herod spoke with them.Matthew 2:9-12 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. [10] When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. [11] On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. [12] And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. What specific actions do we see concerning the Magi?- Continued to follow the star- Found Jesus with Mary- Bowed and worshiped Jesus- Gave Jesus gifts- Returned home- Bypassed HerodWhat qualities listed in our original elements ofworship were present as part of the worship of theMagi?3W willing, O orderly, offering, openR reverent, respectful, regularS singing, seekingH honoring, hearing, hopefulIirreverent NOT, inspiring, individualPpious, peaceful, praising, praying12/29/2002 Leading to WorshipWhy do you think this was true worship?- the effort they expended to find Jesus- the quality of the gifts- we infer their attitude from their actions- They did not come focusing on their own importance, - They did not come to try to impress folks in the little town of Bethlehem- They did not come as a ploy to make points with Herod- The centered their attention on Jesus! … Some significance can be inferred from the nature of the gifts- Gold: a royal gift
