Students’ writing is a significant component. Course Objectives: In this course, you will…- Improve your reading comprehension.- Make connections between what you read and your own experiences- Write clear summaries of what you read- Develop a range of study skills and strategies- Combine information from several reading sources- Read for pleasure and for information1Associate Degree Outcomes: The JCC Board of Trustees has developed a list of essential skills that all graduates should develop. The Board has said:JCC’s goal is to prepare students to live productive and meaningful lives. Implicit in this goal are efforts to prepare students to: (a) live and work in the 21st century, (b) be employed in situations which will require retraining several times during a productive life, and (c) function in a rapidly changing international society. In support of these guidelines, ENG 085 students will develop critical thinking skills, including the ability to:- Generate questions about text before and while reading- Identify impact of emotion on thought.- Distinguish between fact, opinion and inference.- Recognize bias in a piece of writing.- Incorporate new knowledge with old.Classroom Behavior: I want this class to be a pleasant, challenging and rewarding experience for everyone. This requires your cooperation, in the form of courtesy and respect for all. Turn off cell phones and other distracting devices; come to class on time, for every meeting, and stay until the end; Keep an open attitude and be prepared to participate in whole-class and group discussions. Grades are based on the following items. Percentage values are approximations.- Introduction to Critical Reading and other outside reading assignments, projects, class participation, quizzes and tests (50%) You are expected to complete reading and related assignments on time. Be prepared to demonstrate understanding of reading through regular assignments, quizzes, tests, in-class activities and discussions. Credit for in-class activities, quizzes and discussions cannot be made up. Please understand that missing class will hurt your grade in more ways than one.- Cornerstone assignments (20%) The text contains many useful assessments, questionnaires and reflection activities that will greatly enhance your knowledge of yourself as a learner, as well as strategies for ensuring success in school and career. Some exercises will be completed in class, and some willbe required as homework. - Vocabulary expansion (10%) Students will generate some of our vocabulary for study identified in assigned readings. Other vocabulary words will be selected from those defined in the text. Points will be awarded for bringing in words for the class list and for learning all words on the list.- Thematic Reading Project (20%) This project provides independent practice of college reading strategies to learn more about a specific topic through (a) finding and using appropriate sources of information, (b) summarizing information (c) evaluating information (d) identifying and defining difficult words (e) citing sources of information, and (f) synthesizing information from several sources. 2- Academic Honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing your own work and not representing others’ work as your own, either by plagiarizing, by cheating, or by helping others to do so. (See this policy in the Student Handbook and on the JCC Web Page.) For our purposes, this “honesty” translates into doing your own work, correctly citing your sources and, above all, not falsely representing someone else’s work as your own. Violation of this policy can result in failure of the assignment and/or the course. To help prevent these problems, you must submit all draft materials with every paper. This protects you and alleviates any misunderstandings.Grading Scale: Your grade reflects your participation, performance and growth in the class. A 4-point scale will be used to assign grades based upon the percentage of possible points that a student has earned. Note that you must achieve a 2.0 to pass. Less than a 2.0 will not transfer for credit or serve as a prerequisite for another course.93-100%=4.0 64-70%=1.588-92%= 3.5 56-63%=1.083-87%=3.0 48-55%=0.578-82%=2.5 54% and below=0.071-77%=2.0Attendance Policies: Attendance is essential to success in this course and is, therefore, required. If you miss four classes, or three consecutive classes, I will drop you from the course if before the midterm
