Exercise 1 Visualizing Organisms Worksheet Microscopic Name Mary Caroline Ferguson Date September 10 2013 Lab Section 41092 1 When any object is observed under the microscope which objective lens should be used first and why Please discuss in complete sentences Always start with the lowest magnification and gradually work your way up This avoids scratching the lens on the slide and will make it easier to focus The further you move up on the adjustment knob you will not be able to move it back down This may cause the slide to crack because they are long 2 What are three advantages disadvantages of dissecting scopes compared to compound microscopes Some advantages of dissecting scopes would be the depth field 3D appearance You would be able to observe whole organisms with minimal preparation You would also have a bigger work area so you could use it to magnify and still move while you are looking at it A disadvantage would be the lower resolving power You would not be able to see the tiny details you would be able to see in a compound scope The images on a compound scope are turned upside down and switch the sides 3 Discuss three real world situations where a compound microscope would be essential We may actually used microscopes in more situations than we think Most of the medical careers require using microscopes Nurses or doctors who have to examine blood cell counts and urine bacterial counts I m sure there is multiple ways doctors use a microscope to examine their patients Veterinarians also have a big part in using microscopes would be used by checking fecal sample for worms or for fleas on animals Someone else sing a microscope would be a criminologist when investigating a murder or crime scene microscopes can be used by examining finger prints and matching them up
