IN ADDITION, A SIMULATION MODEL WILL BE RUN TO EVALUATE THE NEW ROUTE'S EFFECTIVENESS.U U IPiR1LS]THE HISTORY OF THE S.M.U. SHUTTLE SERVICE STARTED BACK IN MAY OF 1986, ALTHOUGH THIS VERSION OF THE S.M.U. SHUTTLE BUS WAS COMPOSED ONLY OF AN OLD JEEP AND TWO PASSENGER TRAM. THE ACTUAL IDEA TO HAVE A SHUTTLE SERVICE ON CAMPUS CAME FROM THE CHIEF OF THE S.M.U. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY BILL CAFFEE. THE SERVICE WAS WIDELY USED BY THE STUDENTS, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE TRAMS WERE EXTREMELY ACCESSIBLE. THE TRAMS HAD NO DOORS THAT WOULD HINDER ENTRANCE AND EXIT. THE TRAMS WERE FUN TO RIDE , BUT THEY PROVIDED NO PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS. MUD WHICH KICKED UP FROM THE TRAM DIRTIED STUDENTS; MOREOVER, RAINS AND COLD WINTERS WERE THE WORST FOR PASSENGERS RIDING THE TRAMS. THE SCHOOL USED SOME INGENEUITY BY PLACING TRANSPARENT PLASTIC AND GLASS AROUND THE TRAMS, BUT THIS STILL DID NOT KEEP THE PASSENENGERS WELL PROTECTED. IN ADDITION, THE SCHOOL ALSO SAW THAT PASSENGERS WOULD HOP ON THE TRAMS WHILE IT WAS STILL MOVING. S.M.U. SAW THIS AS A HAZARD TO THE STUDENTS AND TO THEMSELVES WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A LAWSUIT. THE SCHOOL DISCONTINUED THE SERVICE OF THE TRAMS AT THE END OF THE SPRING 1987 SEMESTER. THE SCHOOL, SEEING SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE PRESENT SYSTEM, ACTED WITH CHIEF CAFFEE TO PROPOSE A NEW SAFER SYSTEM FOR THE SCHOOL. CHIEF CAFFEE PROPOSED TO PURCHASE A CHAMPION CHALLENGER BUS MODEL #3221, (THE NEXT TWO PAGES SHOW SPECIFICATION AND A PURCHASE ORDER), WHICH IS ATTRACTIVE AND MODERN AND FITS THE S.M.U. MOLD. THE PRESSURE CAME FROM THE STUDENTS DUE TO THE CLOSING OF BISHOP BLVD. TO PARKING. THIS IS ONLY ONE OF MANY REASONS WHY THE SCHOOL PROPOSED TO HAVE A SHUTTLE SERVICE AT ALL.
