Content and objectives of the course:The primary objective of French 1002 is active communication in French. This course will providepractice in the four language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Students will also be introduced to cultural topics and receive cultural information about the Francophone world. Students will learn the intermediate structures of French grammar through class activities, language lab practice and homework assignments. 3. Composition of final grade 4. All assignments must be turned in ON TIME. No late assignments will be accepted. You will get a zero if it isn’t excused.* The language lab is open for you to listen to the audio CD and work on lab manual which countsas 20 % of your final grade. The “Student Activity Manual” will be checked at the end of each chapter, at the same time as the test. You work on your own with that manual and work when youwant to. If you have problems, it is your responsibility to check with the instructor or tutors in the Foreign Language Resource Center.* Oral work (presentations, active class participation, reports, etc.) is a vital part of this course. Unexcused or repeated absences will affect your grade as follow: For every absence for which I don’t have a valid excuse, you’ll loose 5 per cent at the end of the semester. An absence is excused when a written official document is presented and state what you say. * Cheating, plagiarism and overall academic dishonesty will result in disciplinary action. Any question on this, please see an academic advisor, the student handbook or me. *Any student who has a specific disability that would prohibit active participation in any way should contact the course instructor as soon as possible to discuss the appropriate accommodations necessary to complete the course requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor regarding a special accommodation. An official document from the dean’s office will be required.* You are responsible for any work covered in class, and for work missed, whether or not your absence is excused. Jot down the phone number of a classmate so you can check and see what you have missed. I will use QUIA to let you know the assignments for the next class. Visit that site frequently and you will always know what we will do next class. * Homework may be picked up and graded without notification.* Please, be on time for class since I take attendance at 2:00am sharp, not at 2:01. Also, being late is counted against you: three “tardy” means 1 absence.* Major tests will be announced 1 classes prior to that test if it has been changed from the syllabus. These tests must be written in blue or black ink. No pencil please.* Pager, cellular phone, beeper will be turned off during class. NO interruption of that kind will be tolerated. You will be asked to leave the classroom. * When you know that homework will be picked up, it must be typed. Computers are available everywhere on this campus and most especially in the Foreign Language Resource Center. * We will use QUIA for our course assignments. I have attached a tentative syllabus that we will change during the semester. We are not machines and if some chapters are more difficult for you, I will slow down, same thing will happen if I see that a chapter is fairly easy, then we’ll speed up. I also like to separate chapters by some cultural activities: songs, movies, etc. * My office is open to any students who have problems, concerns about the material or anything that is going on in this class. Do NOT hesitate to talk or write to me if you experience problems whatever they are. You can always make personal appointment. And of course, there are many services offered on and off campus as well. The Resource Language Center has FREE tutors, please use them and if you have any problems, complains, concerns about them, talk to me. I’ll take the appropriate action with the tutor and the Center’s director.* There is no replacement for politeness. I will always be polite to you, and I expect the same from you. I will report any misconduct and inappropriate behavior to the correct administration. Please, do not put me in that situation.* Je vous souhaite une excellente session d’été.Programme de la session d’été 2005.
