Field based activities will be provided in conjunction with ELE 3000. Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment with ELE 3000 and ELE 3280 or permission of the dept. chair. Course Goal: Listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and visually representing are the heart of theelementary school curriculum. They form the basis for practically all classroom-learning activities, bothplanned and spontaneous. Consequently, the language arts program has a great impact on a school’ssuccess in achieving its instructional goals. The purpose of this course is to provide teachers with effectivemethods for developing language arts skills for all children. Learning Model for the Course: Information-Processing Model: The information-processing modelenhances student attempts to comprehend by acquiring and organizing data, sensing problems/generatingsolutions, and developing concepts and language for conveying them. The model focuses on input,processing and output. As the content is taught, the teacher directs students’ attention to the methods andmaterials used to present data and tries to get students to focus on what they are doing to make sense ofthe data. This model provides the student with information while emphasizing concept attainment andhypothesis testing. (Joyce, B., Weil, M., & Showers, B. (1992). Models of Teaching, 5th Edition. Boston:Allyn and Bacon.) Outcomes for all ELE Classes:1 Develop a desire for lifelong learning in students and personally display one’s own desire for lifelonglearning, including self-evaluation skills.2 Demonstrate knowledge of facts and understanding of fundamental principles, ideas, and relationshipsamong the various knowledge domains.3 Demonstrate good communication skills.4 Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research, and social influences inthe field of education.5 Describe cultural influences that are reflected in the history of the English language.6 Demonstrate knowledge of current issues in the language arts domains.7 Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which pupils learn. 8 Demonstrate knowledge of children’s language acquisition.9 Describe the factors that influence the development of language.10 Demonstrate/exhibit sensitivity to students’ feelings. Outcomes specific to this course:11 Demonstrate a mastery of basic skills in language arts.12 Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of language (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics).13 Demonstrate an understanding of the developmental philosophy in relation to language arts (listening,speaking, reading, writing, visually representing, and viewing).14 Understanding language acquisition and development.15 Describe the role of language arts in the curriculum.16 Demonstrate knowledge of the listening component in a language arts curriculum.17 Demonstrate knowledge of the oral expression component in a language arts curriculum.18 Demonstrate knowledge of the written expression component in a language arts curriculum. 19 Identify appropriate instructional techniques in a multicultural setting.20 Design instruction to promote a healthy self-concept in their students.21 Use technology to support teaching and learning. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:A. Text: Tompkins, Gail E. (1998). Language arts: Content and teaching strategies (6th ed.). NewYork: Merril, an imprint of Prentice Hall. Examinations: Three written tests consisting primarily of objective items and one/two short essayquestions will be administered to assess student understanding of the course content. These testsinclude two that will be administered after five chapters each and one as a final exam given at thescheduled time for finals. (Final – Thursday, December 13, 2007 – 2:45 – 4:45 pm) C. Assignments: Specific guidelines for the written assignments/projects will be provided as thesemester progresses. The major assignments are:a. Thematic Unit 80 points b. Minilesson with Multicultural Lit. 30 pointsc. Article Review 25 points d. Writing Project 40 points e. Website Sharing 20 points f. Additional Class Activities 20 points each D. Evaluation: Evaluation of student progress will be on the basis of written examinations, courseassignments, class contributions, and performance in assignments. Midterm grades will bedetermined based on the points earned to date. Maximum possible points for the course are as follows: Grading Scale:Thematic Unit 80 points 90% or above = AMinilesson with Multicultural Lit. 30 points 80% - 89 % = BWriting Project 40 points 70% - 79% = CArticle Review 25 points 60% - 69% = DWebsite sharing 20 pointsThree Exams (50 points each) 150 pointsClass Activities 20 points eachNOTE: Class attendance and participation are expected for this course.
