COURSE OUTLINE THET 136 Lighting I 3 Semester Hours HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Description The purpose of this class is to enable students to safely work with basic stage lighting and projection equipment for the stage and provide a basic understanding of lighting technology along with new innovations in lighting and projection technology This will include working with electrical wiring hand and power tools stage lights computerized lighting consoles projectors and media servers Prerequisite THET 135 4 hours weekly Overall Courses Objectives Upon successfully completing the objectives of this course the student will 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Articulate and demonstrate the role of lighting and projection lighting design and the lighting designer and technicians in staged entertainment Gain an understanding of how lighting design and projections supports theatrical productions from the technical aspects of lighting design Explain the characteristics of all common light sources and their applications limitations and requirements Recall the various ways that light can be shaped with lenses and reflectors along with standard practices of how to hang circuit cable focus gel lamp maintain and repair stage lighting equipment Identify and describe major changes and innovations in lighting and projection technology Identify all types of lighting instruments and how to choose instruments to create a desired effect Operate manual and computer lighting control boards Evaluate and articulate the basics of additive and subtractive color mixing Evaluate and articulate the basics of lighting design for various types of stage entertainment Major Topics I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII The 7 Design Steps Controllable Qualities of Light and the Functions of Stage Lighting Elements of Design and the Lighting Team Electricity Lighting sources Reflection and Refraction Hand Drafting and CAD Drafting Cues and Computer Lighting Consoles Distribution and Intensity Control Color Practicals and Effects Projections and Media Servers New Technology Innovations including LED and Automated Moving Fixtures Course Requirement Grading exams Grading procedure will be determined by individual faculty members but will include projects quizzes midterm exam final exam and final project Other Course Information This course may be used as an Arts Humanities or Arts and Sciences electives
