COURSE DESCRIPTIONA comprehensive study of Anatomy, physiology and function of endocrine glands in animals with particular emphasis on humans. This course will examine the current research on hormone related problems in humans such as the widespread effects of the stress response on physiological systems.Prerequisite: Undergraduate or graduate course in physiology and a willingness to put in plenty of study time.This course requires you to access the course website through blackboard in order to view online lectures and all other coursematerials. The review sheets linked on your blackboard page will help you prepare for exams. You are expected to have viewed the online lectures, completed the assigned readings, completed review sheets and completed the discussion boards before each exam.3. TEXTBOOKS1. THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATIONThe conceptual framework defines the vision of the Department of Natural Sciences which underscores the purpose of the School of Education in preparing its candidates for teaching and leadership roles in a global society. The historical development of and important advances in endocrinology.2. The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of endocrine glands and tissues.3. Hormonal integration systems.4. The chemical nature and classification of hormones.5. The molecular synthesis, release, secretion, and metabolism of hormones.6. The known mechanisms of action of hormones.7. Methodology for measuring hormone levels in biological specimens.8. The chemistry, regulation and functions of all the major hormone systems in the body. (Hypothalamic, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreatic, digestive, and gonadal).9. The results of hyper and hypo secretions of the hormones as they relate to human functions.10. The role of hormones in regulating the metabolism.11. A comparison of endocrine versus neurological control of physiologic functions12.
