Where to get helpHarvard University Library Office for Information SystemsUsing ERNIE to create a URN for E-resources1. IntroductionERNIE – Electronic Resource Naming InterfacE – allows librarians to add, update and delete Uniform Resource Names1 (URNs) in three NRS Authority paths: hul.eresources, hul.ebook, and hul.eother:- hul.eresources is intended for free or licensed resources that are available to Harvard University users and will likely be listed in E-Research- hul.ebook is intended for single ebooks or collections of ebooks that are too small to handle through the ebook batch process- hul.eother is intended for Harvard library created resources, such as research guidesERNIE also allows participating libraries to create URNS for e-bookplates that appear in HOLLIS:- hul.ebkplt is intended for links to e-bookplate thumbnails in DRS (participating libraries only) - hul.ebkpll is intended for links to either full size e-bookplate images in DRS, OR to library-maintained donor recognition pages (participating libraries only)This documentation describes the process for adding, updating and deleting URNs for E-resources.1 A URN is a way to publish a link to a resource that allows a change to be made to the URL without having to send out a new link. For example, if free resource becomes restriced, the URL for that resource will change.January 13, 2019- President and Fellows of Harvard College http://hul.harvard.edu/ois/systems/erm/docs/e-resource_urns.pdfUsing ERNIE to create a URN for E-resources Page 2 of 82. Create a new URN for E-resources1. Open ERNIE in a browser: http://wally.hul.harvard.edu:8000/ernie/ernie.html2. Choose Status New, choose Type E-resource and enter the Unique ID for the resource. A Unique ID can be a one word description of the resource. The example below shows a complete form for creating a URN for a list of research guides in E-research. The Unique ID for this resource is pubmed.3. If this is a licensed resource (restricted to the Harvard community), leave the box checked for HUID/PIN required. If not, uncheck the box. The box is checked by default.4. Enter the URL for the resource.5. Enter your library’s email contact(s) for ERNIE in the send notification email field.- The following is an example of a complete form:Revised: January 13, 2019- President and Fellows of Harvard College http://hul.harvard.edu/ois/systems/erm/docs/e-resource_urns.docUsing ERNIE to create a URN for E-resources Page 3 of 86. If the URN does not work and you received an email confirmation and have waited the full 45 minutes, please confirm that the URL was entered correctly. If after verifying thatthe the URL is correct and waiting the full 45 minutes the URN still does not work, then please send a message that includes the E-resource title, and URN posted in the confirmation screen and email to this email address: [email protected] Revised: January 13, 2019- President and Fellows of Harvard College http://hul.harvard.edu/ois/systems/erm/docs/e-resource_urns.docUsing ERNIE to create a URN for E-resources Page 5 of 83. Update an existing URN for E-resourceUpdates may occasionally need to be made to E-resource URNs. An example of an update is a change in an E-resource’s URL.The following is an example of how to update an E-resource due to a change in the URL:1. Locate the current URN for this E-resource. For example: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:pubmed2. Fill out the form on ERNIE by changing the status to Update, the Type to E-resource, andthen add the Unique ID. The Unique ID is found on the existing URN and is made up of the remaining characters that appear AFTER the final colon (:) in the URN. In the above example, pubmed is the Unique ID.3. Enter the new URL in the URL field.4. Change the HUID/PIN required? checkbox as needed. The box is checked by default.5.
