BAE2023Lab #1, Spring 2009Particle Physical CharacteristicsSize, Shape, and VolumeThe goal of this laboratory exercise is to determine physical characteristics such as size, shape, and volume of particles as might be used for sorting.A. Select a product to measure its physical characteristics. Products could be: baby carrots, pecan in shell, stones, corn kernels, wheat, soybean, grapes, cookies or pretzels. You will select 2 different products and repeatthe following steps for each product.B. Determine size by taking three perpendicular lengths “equivalent diameters” of 10 or more samples of the product.C. Measure the product’s volume by water displacementD. Compute the product’s volume and sphericity using the appropriate formula from the textbook.E. Compute the mean and standard deviation of each dimension, volume, and sphericity.F. Compare measured water displacement volume with volume computed using measured length dimensions by calculating the error.G. Take the same measurements and make the same computations as above (B, C, D, F) for a metal object of regular shape i.e., sphere or cube.Your lab report should include items such as objective, detailed procedure, formula used to compute volume and sphericity, materials/equipment used, results (raw data collected and reduced or plotted), discussion of how results compare with published values, possible sources of error and conclusions. On the title page, list the team members and each of the contributions to this lab project.BAE2023Safety in the Lab, Spring 2009The goal of this exercise is to help you recognize and understand safety issues inthe BAE Processing Lab.Each team will include an extra page at the end of Lab Report #1 containing the answers to the following questions:1. List five potential safety hazards in the BAE Processing Lab area.2. State what precautions you should take with reference to these five safety hazards.3. List the federal agency responsible for safety legislation and enforcement.4. List the OSU campus office responsible for safety.5. If an accident occurs in the BAE Processing Lab, who would you
