Excel 2007 skills To calculate a growth rate 󰇛󰇜100% A B C 1 Year Avg Labor Productivity Growth Rate of ALP 2 1950 26130.04 3 1951 27425.91 =(B3‐B2)/B2*100 4 1952 27905.56 =(B4‐B3)/B3*100 To create a chart • Select (at least part of) the data you want to graph • Click the Insert tab and then on the type of chart you want (e.g., Line). Getting the chart to look exactly the way you want will take some work and practice. The best way to learn these is to create a practice chart and play around with the options under “Chart Tools”: Design, Layout, and Format. • Design: Experiment with different Chart Types • Design: Add new data with Select Data • Design: Try different Chart Layouts and Chart Styles • Layout: Change the format of elements of the chart by selecting them and using Format Selection • Layout: Add pictures, shapes, and text boxes with Insert • Layout: Change standard text on Labels for titles, axes, legends, etc. • Layout: Change the way the axes look • Layout: change the look of the background and do some analysis on it • Format: make common, basic changes to format of whatever you select. To do very basic regression analysis Make sure the Analysis Tool Pack Add‐in is installed. To check, go to Excel’s start menu, click on “Excel Options,” then “Add‐ins”, then “Excel Add‐ins”, then Go, and then make sure there’s a check mark next to “Analysis Tool Pack.” If it wasn’t installed, after you hit “OK”, Excel will install it for you. • In the Data tab, select Data Analysis in the Analysis area. Then select Regression (and hit OK). • Tell Excel which variable is the Y‐axis and which one is in the X‐axis. If there are two or more right‐hand‐side variables, they must all be contiguous. • Tell Excel where you want the output to go. To do very basic regression analysis in a scatterplot • Create a chart (see above). Choose the “Scatterplot” option, putting your “explanatory” variable on the horizontal axis and the “response” variable on the vertical axis • Click on the data points. • In the Chart Tools tabs, Layout tab, Analysis area, click on “Trendline” and then on “Linear Trendline” (but other kinds of trendlines might be better, depending on the case). • Click on the trendline and then on the “format selection” option (in the ribbon, “current selection” tab). Check the “Display Equation on Chart” box and hit OK. • The “regression analysis” this has carried out is way to basic to be valid, but it might point you in the right direction.
