Román, Jr., Horizon Textbook Publishing, Redding, CA: 2008.COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to focus attention on the social problems which grow out of rapid social and cultural change. Among topics considered are family disorganization, economic insecurity, juvenile delinquency and adult criminality, physical and mental ill health, racial discrimination, international tensions, and education. (UC, CSU, CAN SOC 4)METHODOLOGY: Instruction modalities include lecture, audio-visual presentations, guest speakers, group discussions, and group presentations.COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Punctuality and active participation in class discussions and activities; read and orally present a text chapter with outlineto class members; complete periodic written assignments and supplemental readings and surveys; complete two (2) written Midterms; and complete a Final Examination with brief Essay. One (1) participation point will be deducted for leaving class early or tardiness. Final (Essay Guidelines)Final Essay Chapter Selected: ____________________________________ Use APA format: Do not use contractions, unless part of a quotation; do not use first person “I”, use “This student, This writer, etc.; and spell acronyms 1. In the first paragraph cite the Chapter title and number. State the reason for selection. 2. In the second paragraph, cite at least six (6) facts, figures, statistics, etc. cited in the text. 3. You may use “bullet point or narrative format, or a combination. 4. In the last paragraph cite a personal or professional experience relating to the Chapter selected, as part of your Conclusion.NOTES: COURSE REQUIREMENT GUIDELINESChapter Presentations:Sociology 1B• 25 to 35 minutes in length maximum. May be seminar (panel), power point, or lecture presentation format. Divide presentation time equally among presenters. Include an Introduction (introduce each presenter by first and last names and describe what will be presented), Transitions between speakers, i.e., (“And now _______ will present _______”), and Conclusion (summary of what was presented). POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR EXCEEDING THE TIME LIMIT, READING, NOT KNOWING THE MATERIAL, NOT KNOWING THE “KEY TERMS” (VOCABULARY), DISORGANIZATION, LACK OF COORDINATION, LACK OF PRACTICE, POOR VOICE TONE, POOR VISUAL CONTACT AND POOR CONVEYANCE OF MATERIAL.• Provide a typed, numbered (bottom center), standard or “bullet point” outline with KEY TERMS (numbered last page(s) to each class member.• Incorporate outside readings, experiences, visual aids, internet research, related special interest materials, etc., to give the chapter more “meaning”. DO NOT READ. Reading will severely impact the grade. KNOW THE MATERIAL and “talk” to the class or demonstrate. PRACTICE AS A GROUP BEFORE PRESENTING. THIS IS IMPORTANT IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A HIGHER GRADE.• Grading is based on delivery, content, organization, visual aids, team work and knowledge of material.Sociology
