GOL 111: Introductory Oceanography Northern Virginia Community College Dr. Victor P. Zabielski Homework Assignment 1: Water Property Profiles Spring 2014 Name: ____________________ Due: March 18, 2014 Create the following graphs using the data for the equatorial Atlantic site used in the Excel Lab on February 4. If you came to lab that night you should already have these graphs completed. a) temperature vs. depth b) salinity vs. depth c) oxygen vs. depth d) phosphate vs. depth e) salinity vs. temperature The data is available on Blackboard. Please see the posted handout for instructions on how to graph using Excel. The depth axis on all the graphs (except the temperature vs. salinity graph) will be the y-axis with the scale reversed (0 meters at top of page with increasing depth downward on page) to more visually represent the changes in the property with increasing depth in the water column. The T-S diagram is always plotted with temperature on the y-axis and salinity on the x-axis with the left lower corner representing 0°C and 0 ‰. When you are completed with the graphs, answer the question on the following page.Using the graphs that you created answer the following questions: 1) At what depth is temperature the highest? Why? 2) At what depth is temperature the lowest? Why? 3) At what depth is salinity the highest? Why? 4) At what depth is oxygen the lowest? Why? 5) At what depth is oxygen the highest? Why? 6) At what depth is phosphate the lowest? Why? 7) At what depth is phosphate the highest? Why? 8) Is the water column stable (most dense water at bottom, least at top)? How can you tell? 9) How many water masses are present in the water column? What are the salinity and temperature values for each of the individual water masses? Try to identify the source of each water mass (see Figure 7.27 on page 226 of your text, Fig. 8-24, pg 258 of old textbook).
