A Visual Analogy Guide to Human Anatomy and Physiology. Morton Publishing Company, Colorado. ISBN: 089582-801-4 I. Get to know me and my teaching philosophy: I want you to know that I understand your challenges as students. I have been in and out of college since 1994. It took me years before I found my passion for science. I am here not only to provide you the content you need to successfully complete this course, but to make if fun and interesting. It is a lot more fun to learn something new when you are having a good time doing it, wouldn’t you agree? I believe that education is an active process and you must be active participants in your own education. In addition to the material in class, my goal is to provide you with critical thinking skills. Content is only the minimum. Learning to ask questions and ask effective questions is just as important. I want you to not only memorize the material, but create new information from it or apply it to the real world. I am here to support your learning experience. II. Course Details: This is a three credit class aimed at exploring basic human anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on cell organization, tissues, and organ systems. Most of you will be going into the health field, as such students are expected to cover and learn a lot of material. This class will require dedication, commitment, and hard work to be successful. I do prefer a dynamic classroom, but please be courteous to others, including your instructor. III. By the end of the course, students will be able to: a. Discuss the structure and function of cellular structures, processes within the cell, and the cell cycle b. Understand the functions of the systems of the body, the structural organization, and the relationship between systems. c. Understand the importance of homeostasis d. Understand and explain abnormalities of the human body IV. Success Strategies a. Stay up to date on your reading! There is a lot of material to cover, so don’t fall behind. Remember, reading your textbook is not the same as reading your favorite book. You have to ACTIVELY engage with the material. b. Come to lecture. Hearing the material in addition to reading the material increases comprehension. c. Form study groups. If you are unable to explain the material to someone else, then you do not know the material. d. Know your learning style! If you do not know how you learn most effectively, how can you change your study habits? e. ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS of me, your peers, and yourself. Questioning is the basis of learning. Again, you have to engage the material to learn it, not memorize it! f. Use the resources on my website and please suggest your own if you find good ones!V. Grades: There will be 3 exams and a comprehensive final examination. All exam grades will count and NO MAKE-UP EXAMS will be given. Four quizzes will also be given throughout the semester. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. Students with less than 3 absences will be allowed to replace their lowest exam grade with their final exam score. You cannot replace a 0, so you will not be allowed to miss an exam and use the final score to make it up. 3 Lecture Exams (100 points each) 300 Comprehensive Final Exam 150 Quizzes (25 points each) 100 Participation (7 x 5 points each) 35 Total = 585 Your final grade will be determined using a standard percentage scale (90-100% = A; 80-89% = B; 70-79% = C; 60-69% = D; below 60% = F). VI. Participation: Participation points are given during each class period. Students will be required to answer a short question thoughtfully, but will not be graded for accuracy. Students must answer the question to receive participation points. Participation points may not be made up if missed. As college students, I expect everyone to display respect and consideration for peers, the classroom, and your instructor. Please arrive to class on time and be prepared. We are all equally responsible for generating a meaningful learning environment. Use of cell phones (including texting) is prohibited in the classroom. VII.
