The management of decisions and program policies of these organizations greatly influences the services that social workers provide to clients. Therefore, it is essential for social workers to understand and develop skills for working in, with, and through organizations. This tutorial/seminar explores major theories of organizations and management as they are applied to human service organizations. It examines the historical development of major schools of organizational and management theory and the dynamic evolution of those theories in human services management. Course Objectives: The stated mission of the doctoral program of the School of Social Work is to produce “graduates who can become effective teachers, intellectual leaders, and knowledge builders in professional education for social work and professional practice.” Pursuit of this mission will be the overall objective of the tutorial/seminar. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate: 1. Familiarity with the major ideas and theories of organizations and management. 2. An understanding of contemporary issues in social work administration/management as developed in the social work literature and other social and behavioural sciences. 3. Familiarity with major issues in the effective delivery of human services to vulnerable populations including minorities and women, and the employment of minorities and women in top management/administration in human service agencies. 4. An ability to apply abstract organizational and management theories and concepts to everyday problems in human service delivery, especially as they relate to the client-worker relationship and the relationship between the worker and the organization. 5. An ability to propose and provide support for proposals to enhance social service delivery through research and the on-going development of the social work administration/management knowledge base. 6. An ability to formulate good research questions which address important issues in contemporary social work management and to develop sound research strategies for answering these questions. 7. An ability to critically evaluate contemporary research on organizations and human service management. 8. An ability to evaluate and select appropriate material from the vast body on organization and human service management for incorporation into social work curriculum. 1Course Structure and Requirements: This summer section of the course is taught using seminar, case study, and strategic planning/evaluation via concept mapping. Seminar Participation (20 points) Students must be prepared for class seminar discussions. Each seminar class meeting will deal with a topic in management, and will be organized around a case, a set of readings, and presentations. All students are expected to be prepared for and to participate in the seminars and relate their own human service experiences to the topics under discussion. There are three levels of participation in class seminars: 1. An active participant is involved in the class to the extent that she/he asks pertinent questions, shares relevant insights and knowledge of assigned readings, and contributes actively to the general learning of the class. Active participation will earn 20 points. 2. A moderately active participant is involved in the class to the extent that he/she actively listens, reacts to information, asks relevant questions when confused by course content or readings, and contributes moderately to the general learning of the class. Moderately active participation earns 15 points. 3. A passive participant is involved in the class to the extent that she/he attends, seldom demonstrates active listening behaviors, seldom asks relevant questions about course content or readings, and contributes little to the general learning of the class. Passive participation earns 5 points. Case Study (50 points) In keeping with the mission of the doctoral program to train social work educators, each student will develop a case study relevant to social work administration, planning, or program policy development in human services. Well-developed case studies bring theories and concepts “to life” in the classroom. A brief paragraph outlining the case study, and the key management theories and concepts that will be applied, must be submitted to the instructor for approval. The student will teach the case study during one of the seminars toward the end of the course. The case study will include the case as well as the teaching manual for the instructor. Together they will be approximately 4000-5000 words in length, not including references (APA format). The case study assignment must be submitted no later than June 30, 2004. 2Criteria for Evaluation of Case Study a. COMPLETENESS AND THROUGHNESS. Have all major components of the assignment have been considered, understood, and successfully applied with supporting documentation? Maximum points = 30. b. ORGANIZATION AND CLARITY. Does the case study reflect high-quality work? Is it well organized and written in a logical manner? Are there appropriate transitions headings used between sections? Are sentence structure, syntax, and grammar correct? Are references properly formatted? Maximum points = 10 C. ORIGINALITY AND CREATIVITY. Does the case study demonstrate use of analytical skills in a way that indicates critical analysis above and beyond mere description of the components of the assignment? Maximum Points = 10. Strategic Planning/Evaluation Module: Concept Mapping Assignment (30 points) Assignment to be announced early in the course. Course Grading System: Seminar Participation (20 pts.)
