Project for ECE 355 Fall 2001 In place of a final exam students in ECE 355 will do a project The intent of the project is to provide an opportunity to investigate an aspect of optical electronics or lasers in more detail than can be done in class The project will consist of A literature search that produces 5 10 journal articles reporting on the topic of interest This means actually going to the library and doing a search not simply surfing the web A summary of the major findings of the articles Your analysis of the linkages of the findings from the articles or your analysis of a laser system utilizing the concepts from the papers Writing a paper 10 20 pages Graduate Students Presentation of your project in class This is necessary for 1 unit credit Examples of topics that might be appropriate for the project are Overview of the state of the art of a particular laser system e g mode locked Ti sapphire metal vapor lasers excimer lasers CO2 industrial lasers diode pumped solid state lasers fiber lasers Historical overview of the development of a laser system e g In 1961 the first Nd laser was built National Ignition Facility now being built Class Presentations The quality of class presentations should be on the level of a presentation at a conference Prepare viewgraph materials using word processing or presentation software Powerpoint is preferred but not required Practice your talk Your presentation should be 15 17 minutes to allow time for questions A laptop and projector will be available to make your presentation Bring a CD your presentation to if you wish to use the projector Name the file your name ece355 GRADUATE STUDENTS It is perfectly acceptable for the project to be aligned with your thesis work but it must be in addition to what you are already doing Project reports are due Monday 10 December 2001 at 5 00 pm in 136 Everitt Lab Journals in which these papers may be found include but are not restricted to Journal of Applied Physics Applied Physics Letters Optics Letters Applied Optics Journal of the Optical Society of America Journal of Quantum Electronics Physical Review A and E Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics Electron Device Letters Photonics Technology Letters Laser Focus World Physical Review Letters Journal of Chemical Physics Applied Physics B Optics Communications 1 FTP Instructions for presentation materials Students making a presentation to the class and who do not provide a CD should ftp the electronic file of their presentation to the following site Name the file your name ece355 ftp uigelz ece uiuc edu login anonymous password ece355 ftp cd pub image author files ftp binary ftp put your name ece355 ftp quit Presentation Schedule order randomly selected Class Wednesday 28 November 2001 Monday 3 December 2001 Wednesday 5 December 2001 Presenters Maneesh Shanbhag Jose Mayen Jennifer Talmadge Yinkgai Liaw Jason Tang Peter Kondratko Stephen Robinson David Bullen Chaofeng Xu Walid Hafez Zhenhua Zhang Seiyon Kim 2 RETURN TO 136 EVERITT LAB BY 5 00 pm FRIDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2001 PROPOSAL FOR ECE 355 PROJECT Name Description of Project Graduate Students Briefly describe your current thesis research topic If there is a similarity between your ECE 355 project and your current research discuss how the ECE 355 topic is different or complimentary 3
