Chemistry 242 Inorganic Chemistry Lab Professor Knapp Schedule of Experiments Revised Mar 1. Before coming to lab, download the experimental procedure and background information from the web (electronic handouts), read that material and the assigned background material, and prepare a prelab outline with flowchart. Experimental procedures are given in the electronic handouts. Downloads are found at "http://www.chem.umass.edu/courses.html" – look under Chem242. NOTE: If you do not check out properly, you will lose the credit equivalent to one experiment (10 pts). The final lab report is due 7 days after your final lab period. Make-up Policy. Makeup labs are at the discretion of the instructor, and might not be possible. All lab work should be made up within one week of the lab period which was missed, as the lab report will be due at the following lab meeting. You must arrange a make-up time as soon as possible and follow exactly the procedure described in the handout, “Make-up Policies and Procedures". A TA signature is required on all work including make-up work.Chemistry 242 Inorganic Chemistry Lab Professor Knapp General Notes The required laboratory notebook is one in which a carbon copy of each page can be made and torn out. Before you may begin work, a carbon copy of the completed prelab outline and any other prelab material for that experiment must be submitted to your TA. To every lab bring your safety goggles, your laboratory notebook, and your electronic handouts. Failure to do so will result in the loss of credit. You must wear approved eye protection at all times while you are in the lab. Repeated failure to do so will result in expulsion from the course. Two texts (Szafran and Williamson) are available on reserve at the library – this saves you money! Carefully read the material on lab equipment, safety, and waste disposal. In both the Williamson text (Organic Experiments) and the Szafran text (Inorganic Chemistry), this corresponds to Chapters 1 and 2. Also refer to the handouts on Safety and Waste Disposal, Notebook and Grading Policies, and Make-up Policies and Procedures (on the course webpage). You are responsible for knowing and following the contents of these handouts. Review and refer to this information throughout the semester. Keep your notebook as shown in Chapter 3 of the Szafran text; a similar example is the first example of Chapter 1 in the Williamson text. Electronic communication: For your convenience, timely announcements about Chem242 may be made via the Chem242 web site. You may also contact the course instructor or TA via email.
