Thomson Brooks/Cole publishers, 2010.Course Description: Second of three semesters in a calculus sequence for science and engineering majors. Tech-niques and applications of integration, elementary differential equations, sequences, series, power series, and Taylor’sTheorem. Use of computational tools.Attendance: As per departmental policy, all 200 level courses require a record of attendance. Attendance will betaken twice daily, once for each half of class. When determining final grades, attendance is used only as a positivefactor. An attendance bonus may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor. Any student missing at most 2 fullclasses (4 half classes) would qualify to receive such an attendance bonus.Maple: Students in all sections of MA 241 are required to complete 6 Maple homeworks. All information can befound at http://www.math.ncsu.edu/calculus. In addition, the due dates for all Maple assignments are posted onhttp://www4.ncsu.edu/∼thwears .Homework/Quizzes: Problems will be assigned out of the textbook. Assignments and (some) solutions are postedonline at http://www4.ncsu.edu/∼thwears (and following the appropriate links). Assignments may or may not becollected. The course will utilize quizzes (of both the ”in class” and ”take home” variety). Quizzes will be based onmaterial covered in class and problems assigned out of the textbook.Grading: The final grade is determined by 49.5% major test average, 25% Final exam, 15% Homework/Quizzes,and 10.5% Maple assignments. The final letter grade will abide by the NCSU standard:98 ≤A+ 92 ≤ A < 98 90 ≤ A- < 9288 ≤B+ < 90 82 ≤ B < 88 80 ≤ B- < 8278 ≤C+ < 80 72 ≤ C < 78 70 ≤ C- < 7268 ≤D+ < 70 62 ≤ D < 68 60 ≤ D- < 62F < 60Exams: The tentative exam dates are predetermined and will be fairly consistent with a normal hourly exam:Exam 1: Tuesday, June 15Exam 2: Tuesday, July 13Exam 3: Tuesday, August 3Final Exam: Wednesday, August 11, 8:00 am-11:00 amMakeups for exams are only given if there is a legitimate excuse or illness. In this case, proper documentation isneeded. If the exam is an excused absence then the student should inform the instructor of the absence as soon aspossible in order to schedule an alternative time to take the exam. Graphing calculators are not permitted on theexams. Most exams are designed so that no calculator is needed. Graphing Calculators are welcome as a learning aidfor homework assignments, although most students should fine Maple to be a superior tool for the study of Calculus.1Cheating of any form is completely unacceptable, and any offense will be punished to the fullest extent possible. Youare encouraged to read the University’s academic integrity guidelines.Suggestions: MA 241 is a difficult class when spaced out over 15 weeks and covered at a more student friendly pace.Attempting to cover and (more importanly) learn the material from MA 241 in 5 weeks is a tremendous challenge foreven the best and hardest working students. As a class, we need to make an effort to give the course our full attentionand be ready and prepared for the challenges ahead. I strongly encourage students to work on homework problemstogether outside of class, ask as many questions as possible, and seek help as soon as you are having difficulty witha concept. I will be available throughout the summer and I am always willing to help. If we all give the course theattention it requires, and take advantage of the resources available, then I am sure that we can accomplish our goalsfor the course.Miscellaneous: Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. In order to takeadvantage of available accomodations, students must register with Disability Services for Students at 1900 StudentHealth Center, Campus Box 7509, 515-7653. For more information on NC State’s policy on working with studentswith disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulation
