Stat 10 Syllabus UCLA, Department of Statistics Summer 2009 Course: Statistics 10: Introduction to Statistical Reasoning Time and Classroom: Monday, Wednesday, 1:00 – 2:50 MS 4000A Professor: Vera Ioudina e-mail: [email protected] Office: Math Science Building 8919 Office hours: Monday, Wednesday, 11:30 – 12:30 or by appointment Course Web site: http://moodle.stat.ucla.edu Course Objective: The main goal of Stat 10 course is to help students think about the data and use statistical methods with understanding. This course focuses on data and on statistical reasoning; it is elementary in mathematical level, but conceptually rich in statistical ideas. Statistics is interesting and useful because it provides strategies and tools for using data to gain insight into real problems in your professional area. Required Textbook: Intro Stats by De Veaux, R. D., Velleman, P.F., and Bock D.E. Pearson Education Inc., 3rd Edition, 2009 ISBN: 0536871345 Course Content: Our study will cover the elements of the Theory of Probability and the general concepts of Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics. The main topics of the course are show below. Teaching Assistants: You will have two lectures with the instructor on Monday and Wednesday, the discussion with the TA on Tuesday and lab on Thursday. TA will play the role of a facilitator. TA will guide the students to find the answer to their questions. Students are expected to read the assigned material, solve the homework problems before attending section and be active participants. Course Management System: Moodle will be used as the course management system. All class announcements, on-line quizzes, labs and additional studying materials will be posted on the Moodle website. Moodle will also make it possible for the students to see the results of the quiz immediately after you take it. You have to open your own account on the Moodle web site http://moodle.stat.ucla.edu. Moodle Quiz: (On-line) Every week the students will take two on-line quizzes. The first quiz will be available on Mondays, from 2:00 pm to 11:50 pm. Then TA s will use the results of the 1st quiz to determine what concepts need to be revised and discussed additionally on Tuesday. The second quiz will be available on Friday, from 2:00 pm to 11:50 pm. You will have one hour to complete a quiz. Do not save the quiz and come back to finish it later! You will lose everything. Finish the quiz and submit it. It is not recommended to take this quiz as a group because the objective is to have you think about the material by yourself and do your own learning. At the end of the course, one lower quiz grade will be dropped. Weekly Lab: Students will learn to analyze data by using statistical analysis software. Stat 10 students use Fathom software, which is easy to use and quick to learn. During lab the TA will demonstrate statistical analyses that help to clarify selected concepts. This demonstration will include data analysis procedures as well as interpretation of the resulting outputs within context. Students are then expected to run similar analyses by themselves. Lab assignments will be turned-in at the start of lab the following week.Homework: A number of homework problems will be assigned weekly from the textbook. The objective is to help the students develop a more in-depth understanding of the material covered in the lecture. All instructions will be posted on the Moodle web site. The homework assignments are due the beginning of the Monday’s lecture. No late homework will be accepted. “Late” means 1:05pm. Mini Exams Four 30 minutes mini-exams will be given during the summer session. Each mini-exam consists of a number of multiple- choice questions and/or open-ended problems. Scientific calculators are encouraged. You can not use your graphic calculators during the exams. All exams grading issues must be discussed with me within the first week after this mini exam. After the final exam no questions regarding the mini exams will be looked at. Final Exam: Final Exam is a comprehensive 1 hour 30 minutes exam. It consists of a number of open-ended problems. Scientific calculators are encouraged. You can not use your graphic calculators during the exams. The date and time of the Final is Wednesday, September 9th, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm. The final exam date cannot be changed. No make-up exams will be given. Grading Policy: Your Final Grade will be determined as follow: Homework 10% On-line Quizzes 10% Labs 10% Mini Exams 40% Final Exam 30% Grading scale: A - 90 – 94% A 95 –100% B - 80 – 83% B 84 – 87% B + 88 – 89% C - 70 – 73% C 74 – 77% C + 78 – 79% D - 60 – 63% D 64 – 67% D + 68 – 69% F 0 – 59 % P at least 70% S at least 70% Calculator: You need any scientific calculator with the statistical functions (at least the Mean and Standard Deviation buttons). Please bring it to every class session. Important:  Make sure that you staple all pages, write your section, your name, student ID and the name of your TA, on both the homework and the lab, otherwise your assignments cannot be identified.  No late homework and labs will be accepted.  If you are sick and not able to turn-in an assignment or take the mini exam, you need an official doctor’s note.  You can not use your notes or any other studying materials on the exam.  No make-up quizzes and exams will be given for any reason.  It is your responsibility to keep all your assignments.
