Modern IsraelIsrael’s entire life has been spent in conflict. When the UN sealed the vote to partition Palestine and create a Jewish state, they also sealed the fate of an ever-conflictedstate. Palestine and the surrounding Arab nations are obviously opposed to the partitioning of what they consider to be their land. The Gaza Strip has been a major danger with constant rocket attacks back and forth. Israel handed it over in the 90’s but increased its blockade to protect Israeli land nearby. This fight will likely continue for years to come.It is interesting to think of Israel as a “villa in the Jungle”. This idea makes some since because the Israeli people do not attempt to blend with their Arab neighbors, they do not often trade, nor travel to their neighboring lands, nor try to learn the language. However, it is a bit disconcerting to think of the government pretending that everything isfine and well and the troubles in Sinai are Cairo’s problem. Personally, I know many Israeli soldiers who would beg to differ with the “villa in the jungle” perspective. PerhapsIsrael’s villa in the jungle is only a reality for some.I can’t imagine living in Israel. Terror is a part of life, bombs are a regular occurrence, death is nothing new. For us, one act of terror paralyzes the nation, for Israel its just another sad day. The Boston bombing “will forever mar what is annually the city’smost uplifting day” but for Israel something like this would simply be lost amongst the hundreds of other acts of terror. I cannot fathom what it must be like living in that constant fear and continuing on with daily life regardless.Conflict in Israel is past, present, and future for those who live there. It is all they know. They have become essentially numbed to it. They take precautions but have no fearin doing so. They are no longer afraid of the inevitable. Fighting is inevitable in Israel. Danger is daily; fear is fleeting. And now with internal conflicts in the surrounding countries, Israel has less to fear, just more to be prepared for.Interesting to think of the Israel and Palestine conflict from the perspective of an exhausted and over-spent parent trying to get two siblings to get along when they have nodesire to be friends. America has spent billions of dollars on their war with no end in sight. The two just don’t want to get along or work something out. Why should America keep pouring money into a black hole? We are struggling internally, yet we continue to give aid to these two children who refuse to get along. Could the conflict be solved with on whole state rather than segregating the land? Khaled Diab writes of one state with united citizens, Israeli and Palestinian, fighting along side each other for equal rights as opposed to against each other. The idea of a single state would bring up old fears and new problems. Israeli people would be losing a Jewish state and Palestinian people would have to surrender their arguments as well. Thisidea would be met with endless backlash from both sides, because as stated before, neither side wishes to concede. There must be a clear winner and a clear loser.Palestine was officially voted into the UN as a non-member observer state. The vote was 139-9 in favour of this move, while Israel and the United States were obviously opposed. Palestine views this as a step in the right direction, towards a two-state agreement between itself and Israel. Israel views this as a step backwards. Palestine is clearly hoping to obtain more opportunity to take international legal action against Israel. Israel is unwilling to accept Palestinians as citizens. Just as surrounding Arab nations are unwilling to accept Israelis as citizens. This obviously is unjust and can causeproblems for families. Morally we all know it would be just to allow everyone to simply be a citizen of the world, but nothing could be so simple. How will the ruling go?The state of modern Israel is all in all a mess. Internally it’s a mess and externally (the neighboring countries) it’s a mess. Within the “walls” of Israel people have become accustomed to danger and death. Some have learned to ignore it and simply take precautions for safety, but somehow this turmoil will have to end. Who knows which waythe conflict will
