Hoes- 2 - COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE TITLE: COMM 2324 - TV Practicum – Live Sports Broadcasting INSTRUCTOR: Jay Hoes OFFICE LOCATION: CM 157 PHONE/E-MAIL: Office - (806) 894-9611 Ext 2443 E-Mail - [email protected] OFFICE HOURS: Posted at CM 157, other times by appointment GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION Course Description: A comprehensive study of pre-production and production of live sporting events for broadcast. Emphasis is placed on directing, camera, replay, producing, graphics and audio. Students will also be required to participate in several off-campus sporting events as directed by the instructors. Course Learning Outcomes: The student will demonstrate the following abilities: - To work multiple positions in the broadcast of live sporting events - To shoot, edit and voice a television highlight story as if the students were on a live newscast - To attend several televised live sporting events and witness the procedures Academic Integrity: As stated in the General Catalog - "As it is the aim of the faculty of South Plains College to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of any student to present as his or her own work which he or she has not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension. Cheating: Dishonesty of any kind on examinations or written assignments, illegal possession of examinations, the use of unauthorized notes during the examination, obtaining information during an examination from a textbook or from the examination paper of another student, assisting others to cheat, alteration of grade records, illegal entry or unauthorized presence in an office are examples of cheating. Complete honesty is required of the student in the presentation of any and all phases of course work. This applies to quizzes of whatever length as well to final examinations, to daily reports and to term papers.- 3 - Plagiarism: Offering the work of another as one's own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, and student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from themes, reports or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. SPECIFIC COURSE/INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS A. Materials: Handouts and other written materials will be supplied to you as needed. Also bring paper and pens to class meetings for taking notes. The majority of the class will take place in a lab setting wherein the students will learn sports broadcasting in a hands-on environment. B. Attendance Policy: Because of the type and amount of information presented, it is very important that you attend every class period. Punctual and regular class attendance is required for all students attending South Plains College. Roll will be checked when the class begins. The attendance policy as stated in the college catalog will be enforced: "Whenever absences become excessive and, in the instructor's opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. In addition, an instructor is required to initiate a student's administrative withdrawal when the student has missed every class during any 14 consecutive calendar-days period excluding holidays." This is four consecutive class periods. For an absence to be excused, you must present a note from your doctor or another instructor on appropriate stationery or letterhead. C. Grading Policy/Procedure and/or methods of evaluation: Each student will be evaluated based on performance of assigned tasks. Instructor evaluation of attendance, punctuality, preparedness, attitude, and participation in classroom activities, discussions, and participation in broadcast events will also be considered in your final grade. The following grade breakdown represents a typical semester. - Off-Campus Events 300 - SPC Basketball Broadcasts 600 - Instructor Evaluation 100 - TOTAL 1,000 points Final grades may be curved at the discretion of the instructors.- 4 - ACCOMMODATIONS: South Plains College strives to accommodate the individual needs of all students in order to enhance their opportunities for success in the context of a comprehensive community college setting.
