Course Description: A standard course in Math Analysis I Course Topics: To successfully complete this course, you must master 70% of the following topics.  Identify, evaluate, characterize and graph linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions.  Determine the domain of a function.  Set up and solve linear business functions, problems involving break-even points and equilibrium points, and applications involving systems of equations and linear programming problems  Use business formulas to calculate simple and compound interest, calculate effective rates, and evaluate annuities  Solve systems of equations by substitution, elimination, Gauss-Jordan elimination, and matrix inversion.  Analyze the nature of the solution to a system of equations.  Apply the use of technology to perform matrix operations, find the inverses of a matrix, and solve systems of equations.  Solve linear programming problems using graphical methods and Simplex Method  Simplify and factor algebraic expressions involving polynomials, rational expressions, exponents, and radicals.  Solve linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and rational equations. Materials/Supplies  Required: Pencils, erasers, 3-ring binder, graphing calculator, 5 blue books from bookstore. Calculators on cell phones will not be allowed on tests.  Required: MyMathLab (MML) Student Access Kit. Instructor’s Course ID (fowler88143).  Optional: College Mathematics for Business, Economics, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences, 12th edition, Barnett, Ziegler, and Byleen. The textbook is available in MML. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to see a classmate to get the assignment and notes. If you have 4 consecutive or 6 cumulative absences, you may be dropped from this class and receive an X or F. If you wish to drop this class, you must complete the required steps with the Admissions office as soon as possible. Until the drop is officially processed, you will continue to be on my class roll and will be at risk of being dropped by me if you miss the maximum number of assignments. Blackboard: Blackboard is the online course management system that will be used for this course. In Blackboard, you will find the course information. To find Blackboard, go to the SPC homepage, or you can use this direct link: http://southplainscollege.blackboard.com. Tutoring: Free tutoring is available on each campus. I will post a schedule when it becomes available.Videos: There are math videos in MML under the tab “Multimedia Library” and in Blackboard. To find extra tutorial videos in Blackboard, you need to log into Blackboard using the following information: Username: mvideos Password: mvideos MyMathLab: Some assignments are completed with a math software program called MyMathLab (MML). You can find a link in Blackboard or you can use this direct link: www.mymathlab.com. Homework: Homework assignments are located in MML under the “Homework” tab. If you do not want to spend all of your time in front of the computer, the homework assignment may be printed, worked on paper, and then the answers can be entered at a different time. You can log out and come back to finish homework assignments. You will be allowed unlimited attempts on homework before the deadline. Quizzes: Quizzes are due at 8 pm on the date listed in the outline. Quizzes are located in MML under the “Quizzes and Tests” tab. You will have 60 minutes to complete a quiz. You will get two attempts on a quiz, and the highest grade will be included in your average. At the end of the semester, two quiz grades will be dropped. Exams: Exams are located in MML under the “Quizzes and Tests” tab. We will meet in a computer lab on exam days, and you will have 2 hours to take an exam. You will turn in your work in a blue book. There are no makeup exams. Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam at the end of the semester. The final exam will replace the lowest exam grade that is not a zero. If you miss an exam and receive a zero, you may NOT use the final exam to replace it. Grading Policy: Grading Scale: A (90 – 100) B(80 – 89) C(70 – 79) D(60 – 69) F(0 – 59) Students with Special Needs: Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made.
