Parents use Starfall to prepare their children for school, and to support them once they are there. Founded in 2002, Starfall is made possible through the Polis-Schutz family. Starfall is produced by a team led by Brandi Chase. It is an educational resource for the classroom or at home. There are no items to buy or purchasebefore a child can use the site. However, there is a Starfall Store that you can purchase writing journals and books to go along with the information taught on the site.Starfall can be used as a home schooling resource. Starfall is recognized and highly rated by experts. The Reading Teacher named Starfall.com one of "Five Internet sites too good to miss" (May 2006). In 2005 and again in 2008, Homeschool.com recognized Starfall as one of their top five educational websites. Starfall was the first Internet site to be recognized by Children's Software & New Media Review as the highest rated product in their Early Elementary category, Spring 2004. It is primarily designed for first grade, but Starfall is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and second grade. The site has games as simple as learning letters, their sounds, and words that begin with that sound. It continues through pages about basic phonics skills such as letter blends, vowels, and word families. It also uses Reader’s Theatre, Poems, and online books to provide reading fluency. It is a website that can be teacher directed or navigated easily by students as long as they had prior knowledge of how to use a mouse and the back button. As a kindergarten teacher, I feel this website provides an interactive and fun resource to every phonics skill we teach.
