Paranormal Activity Detection and Recording System Project Number: 67 Semester: Spring 2004 • Advisor: Dr. Bob Reese - [email protected] • Team Leader: Shaan Wadhwani - [email protected] • Team Members: o Shaan Wadhwani - [email protected] o Ben Sigh - [email protected] o Julius Carter - [email protected] o Brian Nagel - [email protected] Project Keywords: video cameras, audio recording, broadcasting The purpose of the following worksheet is to document the EE/CPE Design project, design team, and faculty mentor, prior to beginning the course. 1. High-level project description (problem solved by design and functionality). A ghost detection system will be developed to locate and record possible paranormal activity. The system will use 100Mbit Ethernet to allow video broadcasting over a network. The transmitter will also include a microphone for the transmission of the audio. The project will have sensors for EM fields, motion, and temperature to trigger video transmission. The dimensions of the transmitter will be no larger than 8 inches by 8 inches by 6 inches. The device will be compatible with existing networking devices. Cost will definitely be a primary concern for the duration of completing this project. The system will be powered by a standard wall socket. 2. A brief discussion of relevant technical background material on which the project is based (identify at least 3 published references). Information on Ghost Detection This reference will give us valuable information on detecting ghosts. DSP FAQ We will use this source to help us with the Digital Signal Processing side of the project. "Fundamentals of Digital Logic with VHDL Design" by Stephen D. Brown, Zvonko G. Vranesic"Basic Engineering Circuit Analysis, 7th Edition" by J. David Irwin (Author) These texts will aid us in our overall project. 3. Projects are evaluated, in part, on the inclusion of a number of the following "real-world" concerns. Provide preliminary comments on how these issues relate to your design. Economic: We will try to keep costs at a minimum. This will allow users to buy multiple detectors for monitoring an entire house. Environmental: Our product should have no adverse environmental effects. Sustainability: Our product should be able to run continuously over a period of at least one week. Manufacturability: Our product will include a camera, audio card, motion sensor, temperature sensor, EMF sensor, and network adapter. These components will be packaged in a box no larger than 8 inches by 8 inches by 6 inches. Ethical: The main purpose of our product is to provide networked surveillance. We hope that our product is used only in a legal manner; however, after purchase we can not control how the consumer uses our product. Health and Safety: Sensitive parts, such as the camera and sensor nodes, may break if handled incorrectly; however, we will try to make our design robust to allow daily wear and tear.Social: If regular paranormal activity is observed, there may be a possibility of contacting the ghosts. Political: This product might aid in government research with paranormal activity. 4. More detailed description of hardware and software design components (both hardware and software design are required for CPE students and both are strongly encouraged for EE students). We will use a web server to broadcast the stream to Ethernet. The box will have a video (FireWire) input to capture the Ghosts. Our project will also incorporate an audio card to stream compressed audio. The box will also have inputs for three sensors to inform the box when to stream the video. A DSP will be programmed to collect input from the sensors, camera, and sound card, and prepare this data for transmission. 5. Vision for participation in project by team members. Julius Carter--audio component; Brian Nagel--programming, video component; Ben Sigh--programming; Shaan Wadhwani--website construction, internet link; ALL--device design, documents, presentations, ordering, assembly, testing; The project will be team-oriented but dividing tasks will increase the efficiency of development. 6. Preliminary schedule of what you are planning to do and discussion of feasibility. 1. Research audio/video components, internet link and EMF sensor. 2. Develop design, select parts, and order parts. 3. Assemble parts 4. Test & debug 5. If time allows, refine design. A working prototype will exist prior to the end of the
