Any employee benefit topic that has appeared in the popular press recently (other than pensions or other deferred compensation) is an eligible topic. Your paper should summarize the primary issues related to this topic. The paper is expected to be interesting, concise, well written and grammatically correct. Each typographical or grammatical error will reduce your grade by one point. The first step in this assignment is to find an article on an employee benefit issue, other than pensions or other deferred compensation, that has appeared in the popular press (Wall Street Journal, Daily Illini, News Gazette, Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Business Week, etc.) since June 1, 2002. Then find several other articles on the topic. There is no time limit on when these other articles were first published. In total, you should have 2-4 articles related to the issue. Copy these articles and turn them in with your paper.When you have selected a topic, sign up for that topic in class. A sign-up form will be available at the front of the room at each class. I will monitor the sign-up sheet to make sure that people are not working on the same topic. If someone else has signed up for a topic, you must select another topic. Since the first person to sign up for each topic will be given priority, there is an advantage to selecting your topic early. You must select your topic by Friday, September 20. Once all students have selected topics, I will pick about a third of the class to make presentations on thesetopics to the class. You will have 5-8 minutes to make a presentation to the class explaining the major issues related to your topic. Each presentation will be graded on a 0-10 scale. The form that will be used to evaluate the class presentations is included on the reverse. Your paper should explain and summarize the issue in your own words; do not quote from other sources. Use standard paragraph structure; do not use bullet points. This text should represent your own writing; plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 for this assignment. The paper should be no shorter than one double spaced page and no longer than two double spaced pages.
