ELE 3280 Developmental Reading in the Elementary School Cecilia Yoakum Early Childhood, Elementary, & Middle Level Education 2417 Buzzard Building Office Hours: In room 2177 by appointment. 581-2161 [email protected] Course Description: This course focuses on the instructional program in reading from kindergarten through middle school which includes NCLB goals, reading methods, basal readers and balanced reading approaches. Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment with ELE 3000 and ELE 3350. Purpose of Course: This course is designed to provide learning experiences which will prepare university students to teach pupils from k-8 the attitudes, skills, and concepts needed to become competent teachers. The nature of reading as a developmental process, reading readiness, planning for instruction using basal readers and trade books, competence in decoding and comprehension strategies will be stressed. Course Text: 1. Reutzel, D. Ray and Cooter, Robert B., Jr. 4th edition. Teaching Children to Read: Putting the Pieces Together, New York: Merrill Prentice Hall. 2. Additional supplementary readings as assigned. Outcomes specific to ELE 3280: • Understand reading skill acquisition • Development knowledge of basic diagnostic techniques for assessing reading levels • Design instruction to develop and utilize cognitive and affective processes by which pupils learn to read. • Design instructional methods that reach children with unique learning styles, different cultural backgrounds and students designated “at risk.” • Demonstrate instruction that encourages children to be life-long readers • Decide what will be learned, activities to promote learning methods to assess if learning has occurred. Outcomes for all ELE classes: • Develop a desire of lifelong learning in students and personally display one’s own desire for lifelong learning, including self-evaluation • Demonstrate good communication skills • Demonstrate/exhibit sensitivity to students’ feelings • Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which pupils learn Demonstrate knowledge of children’s language acquisition Describe the factors which influence the development of language • Demonstrate a knowledge of facts and an understanding of fundamental principles, ideas, and relationships among various knowledge domains • Demonstrate knowledge of current issues in the Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research, and social influences in the field of education.
