Sargeant Reynolds Community College Course Content Summary Course Prefix and Number: NUR 115 Credits: 3 Course Title: LPN Transition Course Description (including lecture hours, lab hours, total contacts) Introduces the role of the registered nurse through concepts and skill development in the discipline of professional nursing. Serves as a bridge for licensed practical nurses and is based upon individualized articulation agreements, mobility exams or other assessment criteria as they relate to local programs and service areas. Includes math computational skills and basic computer instruction related to the delivery of nursing care. Prerequisites: current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and completion of required admission criteria and necessary general education courses for the associate degree in Nursing. Co-requisite: NUR 226. Lecture 3 hours per week. General Course Purpose Nursing 115 serves as a transition and validation for graduates of practical nursing programs upon acceptance into a professional (RN) nursing program. The focus of the course is to review and enhance theoretical knowledge and clinical nursing skills and concepts taught in fundamental nursing courses. The course is designed to assist the LPN in the process of transition into the professional nursing (RN) role, and should broaden the perspective, skills and abilities of students. Life events and work experiences are combined with educational principles of adult learning to prepare the student to meet the consumer’s needs for preventive, restorative and rehabilitative healthcare throughout the life span. The receiving institution grants nursing credit after the student has successfully completed the LPN to RN Transition Course. Course Prerequisites/Corequisites • Current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) Eligibility: • Completion of required admission criteria and necessary general education courses for the Associate Degree in Nursing program NUR 226 Health Assessment Co-requisite: Course Objectives (Each item should complete the following sentence.) Upon completing the course, the student will be able to: 1. Differentiate between the role responsibilities of the LPN and the RN, based on the ANA Code of Ethics and standards of care 2. Differentiate between therapeutic communication techniques and blocks to therapeutic communication 3. Use the nursing process to develop a plan of care for a case study patientJSRCC Form No. 05-0002 4. Discuss teaching and learning principles used in patient education 5 Develop a teaching plan based on an identified need in a case study patient 6. Demonstrate competence in performing in the skills lab selected nursing skills 7. Explore current concepts in the nursing management of elimination, cardiovascular, respiratory, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and psycho-neurological issues Major Topics to be Included Concepts:• Review of: o Nursing process o Dosage calculations o Communication (nurse/patient relationship; interpersonal communication; computer; written skills) o Teaching/learning (study skills; patient education) o Review of ethical-legal principles o Cultural aspects of healthcare • Role responsibilities of LPN and RN • Critical thinking – exercises • Management and promotion of physiological needs: GU/GI; CV/RESP Health; Fluid and Electrolytes; and Cognition/Confusion/Stress Skills Validation: Validation of the following skills by examination and/or demonstration: • Physical assessment; adult history taking • Dosage calculation (includes IV drip rates) • Sterile procedure – Foley catheter & wound care, • Medication administration – oral, topical, NG and injections • Enteral therapies – tube feeding; insertion of gastric tubes, placement, use of enteral feeding pumps • Equipment for IV therapy • Elimination—enemas, catheter insertion and ostomy care Effective Date of Course Content Summary: May
