Late PolicyAs I’ve said before, no late work will be accepted unless we’ve made prior arrangements. As for exams and competency tests, if you cannot make it to class on an exam day you MUST contact me Before we take it in class to arrange a time to make it up. If you do not show up on an exam day and fail to contact me before, you will EARN A ZERO on that exam. Once an exam is returned, no make-up exam will be given. I understand that things happen – keeping me informed will buy you a little more understanding than if you were to simply “skip” it. Please understand that revisions to the class schedule may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. I can’t say it enough: it is important that you attend class each day to be sure you are up to date on any changes that are made. Initial competency tests must be taken on the date they are given. If you fail a competency test and need to retake it, you must retake and pass the make up(s) one week after the initial test is given. This method will ensure that you are not taking all of the competency tests too close together and if you should fail one you will still have time to withdraw from the course.MTH 110-21: Pre AlgebraWinter 2007Instructor: Billie Gannon-GirouxOffice: JM 150 Office Hours: 11:00-12:00 noon Monday & Wednesday E-mail: [email protected] Phone: (517)787-0800 ext. 8322 – office; **This syllabus is subject to revision at any time at the instructor’s discretion.About our Class: We will meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00a.m. – 10:56a.m., Room 241 of James McDivitt Hall, JCC Main Campus.Required Textbook: Tussy, Alan S., and Gustafson, R. ATTEND CLASS REGULARLY 2. Be prepared and ready to work3. Read through the required sections before class4. Participate in class 5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help6. Use the resources in your book and on companion websites 7. Do your homework 8. Stay on top of your tentative class schedule9. Keep an open mindInstructional MethodsYou are each unique individuals with your own personal style of learning. Some students do better in group settings, some do their best work independently and others do best when they can verbalize what they know or use their hands to manipulate versus writing an idea down on paper. I will do my best to incorporate all types of learning in our class so that you can reach your goals, feelconfident that you know the math concepts as we go over them and become more aware of your own best learning practice – think of it as your thumbprint!Philosophy of TeachingSomeone once told me, ‘If you find a job that you like, you’ll never have to work aday in your life.’ My job is to guide you to an understanding and operational knowledge of the concepts in this course while helping you develop the study and organizational skills you’ll need to successfully complete your college career. I don’t know everything, so if you have a problem that I am unable to solve, I will2seek the necessary help to get the answers you need. I will come to class ready toteach you just as you must come to class ready to learn.Class ClimateThroughout this semester, I will seek to foster and model a climate in which differences among students are seen as valuable resources and learning opportunities. I will be sensitive to and respectful of the diversity in our class and I expect you to do the same. Neither discouraging comments nor actions will be tolerated in our class. Did I mention that you must come to class ready to learn? I understand that you may have work or family obligations which require some technological devices to be on your person at all times. I ask that you switch the tones to vibration mode and if you must take a call or answer a page or text message – please do so in the hallway so as not to interrupt your classmates. Side conversations are very distracting – not to mention disrespectful. I wouldn’t talk to someone else while you are asking me a question– please listen when I am speaking. If too much talking takes place during instruction, I will ask that a student(s) choose another seat. We have little time to get through a lot of material and let’s be honest with one another: mutual respect goes a long way!The Center for Student Success www.jccmi.edu/success/needtutor.htmShould you begin to struggle in any of your courses, PLEASE set up a time to meet with me and together we can discuss your needs and form a plan with The Center for Student Success. Located in Room 123 of Bert Walker Hall, Center for Student Success is available to you Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (517)796-8415. Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should also contact CSS. This is the first step in acquiring accommodations needed to facilitate your learning and success.Course Requirements
